An excerpt from a quarter peal of Plain Bob Minor at Ash, Surrey on Wednesday, 10th July 2024. This quarter was dedicated to a good friend of mine called Hans Rashbrook who rang in the Hendon area and also went to lots of ringing events I happened to attend in London. A great guy.
St Peter's Church in Ash, Surrey has a lovely peal of six bells cast in 1950 by John Taylor & Co. They are bright, melodious, and easy to ring. These include the Peace Bell, added in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. The bell tower, located on the southwest corner, is short and square, with small louvred openings and irregularly placed openings adding to its unique character.
A church, likely built of wood, is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 when Azor, a powerful Anglo-Saxon landowner, is listed as owning the land. Azor retained ownership even after the Norman Conquest. On his death, he gifted his lands, including the church at Ash, to Chertsey Abbey in exchange for prayers. Chertsey Abbey managed the church until the English Reformation, after which St Peter's passed to the Crown. During Edward VI's reign, the Crown needed land for Windsor Castle's hunting area and exchanged land with Winchester College, making them the parish's Patron. This gives Winchester College the right to approve each new priest. The parish became separate from Frimley in 1866.
St Peter's was originally part of the Diocese of Winchester but became part of the Diocese of Guildford in 1927. The church features a south door with delicate carvings from circa 1170 and a 15th-century tower built of ironstone with six bells, five from 1798 and the Peace Bell from 1919. The church was expanded around 1865 to accommodate a growing congregation, adding the north aisle and north chancel chapel. The nave is built of flint and sandstone rubble. The east window is a 19th-century addition in the 13th-century style, and the south chancel wall retains a 13th-century lancet window.
Inside, the church has a tiled floor, a four-bay arcade with round columns in the north aisle, and a 14th-century chalk chancel arch. The chancel and north chapel are connected by a two-bay arcade with carved foliage capitals. The chancel measures 30 feet by 14 feet 3 inches, and the nave is 58 feet by 24 feet. A 13th-century piscina can be found on the south chancel wall. There is a marble and mosaic reredos in the new chapel and modern 20th-century screens. The stone pulpit is from the 19th century, and the 17th-century octagonal wooden font with a lead-lined bowl stands on a central stem with eight columns. Monuments include one for Reverend John Harris (d. 1759) and his wife Judith (d. 1765), and a brass tablet to Thomas Manory (d. 1516) and his daughter Anne Vyne, with a shield bearing an engrailed cross above them.
