Laguna și golful Balos sunt una dintre cele mai vizitate destinații turistice de pe coasta de vest a Cretei, împreună cu plajele Falasarna și Elafonisi și Parcul Național Samariá Gorge.
Golful a fost creat de ridicarea tectonică treptată a părții de vest a Cretei și în special a insulei Cape Tigani.
Vedere asupra insulei Imeri Grabusa
Nisipul fin al lagunei si al plajei este alcatuit din scoici si corali. Cea mai mare parte a lagunei este acoperită de un strat subțire de apă, fără vegetație până la o adâncime de 50 cm. Dunele de coastă sunt, de asemenea, acoperite cu vegetație rară. Ocazional, pot fi găsite bile mici de gudron, care provin din operațiuni ilegale de spălare a rezervoarelor de pe vasele petroliere din larg.
Fâșia care separă Capo Tigani de promontoriul Corico este realizată din ciment natural (adică nisip cimentat) [2], iar umbreluțele și șezlongurile sunt poziționate acolo în sezonul estival pentru turiști.
Zona este complet nelocuita si are o singura facilitate turistica deschisa doar vara. Pe înălțimile Capului Tigani se află o capelă, în timp ce pe insula Imeri Grabusa (Ήμερη Γραμβουσα) se află ruinele unei cetăți venețiene din secolul al XVI-lea.
La Balos se poate ajunge pe un drum pitoresc lung de 8 km, neasfaltat, cu vedere la golful Kissamos. Cam la jumătatea drumului se află capela Agia Irini. Drumul se termină într-o parcare (situată la 150 m deasupra nivelului mării) din care se coboară până la laguna Balos.

Balos Lagoon and Bay is one of the most visited tourist destinations on the west coast of Crete, along with Falasarna and Elafonisi beaches and Samariá Gorge National Park.
The bay was created by the gradual tectonic uplift of the western part of Crete and especially the island of Cape Tigani.

The fine sand of the lagoon and the beach is made up of shells and corals. Most of the lagoon is covered by a thin layer of water with no vegetation up to a depth of 50 cm. The coastal dunes are also covered with sparse vegetation. Occasionally, small balls of tar can be found, originating from illegal tank washing operations on offshore oil vessels.
The strip that separates Capo Tigani from the Corico promontory is made of natural cement (ie cemented sand) [2] and umbrellas and sunbeds are positioned there during the summer season for tourists.
The area is completely uninhabited and has only one tourist facility open only in summer. On the heights of Cape Tigani there is a chapel, while on the island of Imeri Grabusa (Ήμερη Γραμβουσα) there are the ruins of a 16th-century Venetian fortress.
Balos can be reached by a scenic 8 km long, unpaved road overlooking the bay of Kissamos. About half way there is the chapel of Agia Irini. The road ends in a parking lot (located 150 m above sea level) from which it descends to the Balos lagoon.

Η λιμνοθάλασσα και ο κόλπος του Μπάλου είναι ένας από τους πιο δημοφιλείς τουριστικούς προορισμούς στη δυτική ακτή της Κρήτης, μαζί με τις παραλίες Φαλάσαρνα και Ελαφονήσι και τον Εθνικό Δρυμό του Φαραγγιού της Σαμαριάς.
Ο κόλπος δημιουργήθηκε από τη σταδιακή τεκτονική ανάταση του δυτικού τμήματος της Κρήτης και ιδιαίτερα του νησιού του ακρωτηρίου Τηγάνι.

Η ψιλή άμμος της λιμνοθάλασσας και της παραλίας αποτελείται από κοχύλια και κοράλλια. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της λιμνοθάλασσας καλύπτεται από ένα λεπτό στρώμα νερού χωρίς βλάστηση σε βάθος έως και 50 cm. Με αραιή βλάστηση καλύπτονται και οι παράκτιοι αμμόλοφοι. Περιστασιακά, μπορούν να βρεθούν μικρές μπάλες πίσσας, που προέρχονται από παράνομες εργασίες πλυσίματος δεξαμενών σε πλοία πετρελαίου ανοιχτής θαλάσσης.
Η λωρίδα που χωρίζει το Capo Tigani από το ακρωτήρι Corico είναι φτιαγμένη από φυσικό τσιμέντο (δηλαδή τσιμεντένια άμμο) [2] και εκεί τοποθετούνται ομπρέλες και ξαπλώστρες κατά τη θερινή περίοδο για τους τουρίστες.
Η περιοχή είναι εντελώς ακατοίκητη και έχει μόνο μία τουριστική εγκατάσταση ανοιχτή μόνο το καλοκαίρι. Στα υψώματα του ακρωτηρίου Τηγάνι υπάρχει ένα παρεκκλήσι, ενώ στο νησί Ήμερη Γραμβούσα υπάρχουν τα ερείπια ενός ενετικού φρουρίου του 16ου αιώνα.
Ο Μπάλος είναι προσβάσιμος από έναν γραφικό, μη ασφαλτοστρωμένο δρόμο μήκους 8 χλμ. με θέα στον κόλπο της Κισσάμου. Στα μισά περίπου της διαδρομής βρίσκεται το ξωκλήσι της Αγίας Ειρήνης. Ο δρόμος καταλήγει σε χώρο στάθμευσης (βρίσκεται 150 μ. πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας) από τον οποίο κατηφορίζει στη λιμνοθάλασσα του Μπάλου.
