I'm so grateful there are systems in place nowadays to help kids and adults deal with the passing of a student. I remember when I was in high school, a guy that a bunch of us knew passed by his own hands and we only found out through word of mouth. No announcements, no guidance. It was a really rough time. Taking the day for yourself was a very good idea. Big hugs to you🤗

I am sorry you went through this. Throughout my teaching career we faced the loss of a student several times ... car accident, cancer, suicide. It is very difficult and high school students come to face their own mortality for the first time. Some will need much more support over the year than others. Dont be afraid to rely on the trauma team or call them back in if needed. Students will guide the conversation based on their needs.

I’m so sorry about the student in your school. A kid in my high school died and there was no announcement, no counseling, nothing. Worst of all the driver still came to school for the rest of the year (he was driving, got in a wreck, and the passenger died). And I don’t know the specifics but that kid was wrecked. And I don’t think even he got counseling at school.

@@Natalie.D I’m super grateful that our school had the resources needed to help our kids through that tough time.
