PLAN YOUR UBC SCIENCE COURSES WITH ME
Happy Saturday!
Many of you asked if I could film a video about planning your courses. It's confusing, not well explained, and it can be a rather complicated process sometimes. Sooooooo, I finally got around to filming a video to 1) show you where you can find almost everything you need to know for your degree, 2) what the required courses are for the majors offered by UBC, and 3) how to plan your schedule! You're going to learn to love the academic calendar my friends... learn to love it!! In part, the most challenging part of all this is navigating UBC's massive website and knowing where to find information. If you can figure that out you are set. I share some tips with you guys towards the end about course planning and how to structure your schedule so stay tuned!
If you don't know, you can access your course registration/schedule page through your SSC. When you login, click the blue "Course Schedule" button and it will take you directly where you need to go.
Here are the links to the academic calendar for the BSc and the Specialization page.
Academic Calendar: www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/...
Second Year Specialization Requirements: science.ubc.ca/students/degre...
If you have any questions at all, I am here to do my best and help you guys out! I love answering questions, and you guys give me the opportunity to learn more about the world of UBC... so its a win win situation haha! Feel free to email me at: itsmemaddya@gmail.com

if you're Canadian & a registered student at a Canadian college/uni there's a sweet summer exchange the government does called J'Explore, usually goes 5 weeks it gets you 6 credits towards arts (doesnt affect your GPA; just shows up on your transcript as FREN credits) and there's all these universities back east where you stay in a dorm/with a local family; it's a free bursary and you only have to pay for your plane ticket there plus Québec has really epic outdoor concerts/festivals all summer long; probably all cancelled this year though :(

Her only complaint was that the weekly cohort based tutorials were kind of useless. She said she would have rather had that time to study what she needed to/wanted to rather than be instructed to complete something irrelevant. Overall though, she really liked having classes with the same people because it made it a little easier to make friends!

Hi! I am glad to hear you enjoyed it :) I only took 4 and 4 courses in my first and second term.It was challenging for many different reasons. A lot of students start with 4 courses and then take 5 - they build up to it. I have a few friends in Arts and one of them did 4 and 4, and the other did 5 and 4. They found it to be fairly manageable. My friend who started with 5 felt overwhelmed in her first term so she went down to 4, but many people find 5 in term two to be manageable!

Hi! Depends what is outlined in the academic calendar! If 6 credits are required then you must complete all 6 credits BUT that doesn't have to happen all in your first year. You can complete both communication courses in your first year or you can complete one in your first year and one later on. They usually encourage you to get it done asap because communication classes become difficult to get into later on, but that being said, you have some flexibility!

Hi, I just had a question regarding the timing of the schedule. So if you have one class 9-10 and then a different class from 10-11. How would that work ? Wouldn't you get late for the 10-11 class since walking from one class to another will take time.
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question! For any class that is 1 hour long ie. 9-10, it is actually only 50 minutes of instructional time. 10 minutes is left at the end of the class to give you time to get to your class that starts at 10. For example 9-9:50 you are learning, 9:50-10 you are making a run for your next class, and at 10 you start your next class! Same goes for 90 minute classes - 80 minutes of instruction and 10 minutes to get to your next class! Hope that helps!

In other words, will faculty of cs admit the student who studied from first year in UBC more early than transfer students if their grades are same?

Hi! I am honestly not to sure. Sometimes certain specializations save a certain number of seats for students coming in but I don’t know how many or if CS does that. UBC should be sending out emails regarding specialization declaration soon as it is happening mid June. I would assume because you’re a UBC now that you declare in that same period, which would then give you the same chance as anyone else!

To my knowledge, CS is only an option within the faculty of science and you can't "major" in it if you are pursuing a BASc.
