Plane Stress Elements in Abaqus

Why should one select solid section for plane stress elements? The Thickness information is not in the geometry and it is not given in the section property as well. So is the thickness info not required for plane stress elements?

Plane strain analysis is done by selecting plane strain elements instead of plane stress elements. I think the rest of the model set up is the same.
