Absolutely fascinating! And I was delighted to see VH-BRC (the Ansett flying boat) still preserved. As a small boy I remember my parents taking me to Rose Bay to see the flying boats and as an Adult I worked for Ansett Airlines.

As a boy we used holiday at White Cross Bay, Lake Windermere in the Lake District. This was a former Shorts repair facility. As a kid it was amazing. Not too many buildings survived from the factory but we'd occasionally find heaps of metal turning, still shiny even after 30 years! There were stories if a sunken Sunderland in Windermere but that was just an urban legend. I have seen photos of Sunderlands on the Lake. Must have been amazing to see them land and take off.

Thanks for the comments folks - it's great to have some feedback. We will be diving the wreck again this year, weather and tides permitting. If you know the Solent, then you’ll know the tidal range and timings are critical - we’ve tried springs, neaps, ebb and flood tides - all have had terrible visibility. We’re also been looking into tracking down some of the salvage vessels working in the area at the time of the sinking… interesting - but again, no definite answers. The story continues!

Hi John. The aircraft in the museum flew for a short while in Ireland when Captain Blair the husband of Maureen O'Hara had it. He flew it from lough derg in Killaloe co Clare. There are a number of sunderland wrecks in lough Erne in Northern Ireland sunk surplus at the end of ww2. Also at the end of the war new aircraft were floated out off the coast and sunk. mikecoughlan1@gmail.com

Into the 1970s and '80s Navy clearance diver units (CDUs) were still actively involved in exploding the wrecks off Calshot to prevent them becoming hazards to navigation. My aunt's son was a navy clearance diver who was involved in detonating at least one sircraft wreck off Calshot, it wasn't always clear what was being demolished due to the occasionally poor conditions of visibility under the water and the frequently poor condition of the items in question. It was quite a hot-spot for aircraft wrecks not just because of the flying boat operations there but also because of its proximity to Southampton which was a very heavily attacked city due to its docks. The Sunderlands, apparently, while great aircraft were, apparently, rather less good on the water and even moderate weather conditions could see them sinking whilst moored while attempting to take-off or land in less than calm conditions could result in them catching a wave and flipping or breaching the hull where the aircraft's momentum would cause it to flood rapidly and effectively drive itself into the depths. There are, apparently, the wrecks of two further Sunderlands just off Netley that were shot down in a friendly fire incident, being mistaken for enemy aircraft as they were off the normal track for aircraft flying from, or returning to, Calshot, tragically...

A great doco and a big surprise too !! That beautiful Ansett VH-BRC was the exact aircraft the took us to Lord Howe Isle on our honeymoon in March '66. A beautiful old girl and we always wondered what happened to her. I'm ex Navy and I used to watch her and her sisters roar up Sydney Harbour on the step and lift off and scrape over the top of the Harbour Bridge with water falling on the traffic below ! I would give anything for another flight in one of them. Cheers Terry Powell Australia.

Wycombe grandfather was a police officer in Poole Harbour in ww2 and he told me 3 Sunderland flying boats were strafed and sank in Poole Harbour when the town was bombed.

There's two or three of these flying boats just up the road from me that are still flying the Martin Mars is the largest flying boat Used as a water bomber here on Vancouver island.They sold one to some European country

Very high-quality documentary-- good narrative and a resonant, full voice. Fact-finding is cautious and well-paced, and photography superb. Naturally, I subscribed-- lost or missing aircraft are especially fascinating, since their customary aluminum construction so easily deteriorates with time and elements. Especially interesting is the English/French channel, a graveyard of WW2 aircraft, with a few in amazingly intact condition, despite the salt water environment. That would make a good video, as well, although with the hazard of considerable depth and the possibility of unexploded, live bombs buried nearby.

We never worked on piston engines at AN in white overalls. Khaki was standard issue. Electricians (loafers) had the whites.

Back in the day I spent a lot of time diving in the Solent and off the back of the wight. The viz that close in to shore is mostly going to be low, no matter the time of year/state of the tide. You could do with hooking up with someone who has a side scan sonar (can’t recall if David Wendes on Wight Spirit used to have one). Coincidentally my uncle was a flight engineer on Sunderland’s during the war operating out of Castle Archdale.

I would suggest that the nose section was removed in training operations, probably for Navy CDUs who can be involved in rescue operations involving aircraft lost at sea. Another possibility is that this was a damaged aircraft which may have been undergoing repairs or was considered unfit for further service and was stripped for usable parts before sinking, though I would imagine there would be more in the way of records for the aircraft if it had been stripped for parts as often more careful records were kept for aircraft withdrawn from service and stripped than were maintained for repairs to in-service aircraft due to the pressure of time there was for repairing aircraft and the lack of pressure of time on stripping a written-off unit...

So are you going to try and dive down this summer, if you do don't pick spring tides, you will have a good 8 knots current, that will stir up the mud, would be better to try neap tides, when the water is moving a much slower place, when you get only a 1.5 meter tidal range. The River Test and the lesser other 3 rivers that join the Test are all chalk rivers, that is why the water looks that milky green

I think this is why they have robots. If the goal is just to identify the wreck, a robot can stay down longer and make use of IR and Thermal imaging. It's not cheap, but then again, you can rent them.

I made it as an Airfix model in, I'm guessing, about 1968 and have been fascinated ever since in it's failure, especially since the US "copied" the idea with much greater success in the V-22 Osprey. The lake on Rennell Island is meant to have 5 or 6 Catalina's sunk at the end of WWII. Mainly because it was less hassle than trying to fly them home to the USA.

Should have had divers with more diving experience. Cams make vis look worst than it is. They were on the wreck, had orientation, knew where they were, what to look for and chickened out.

That would explain a LOT of the UFO reports - American military aircraft flown by space aliens. ^_^ It would make for a great, amusing story - as was done to excellent comedic effect in James P. Hello. I think this is an Operation Deadlight boat. One of about a hundred U boats scuttled after the war in 1946. I doubt there's anyplace you'll get a number for it. But if you google 'deadlight' you will get more info.

Trouble is, as always, cost. TSR-2 was being built at a time when Britain was still suffering from the war debts and so was cut (stupidly in my opinion) to save money. Harrier, a work of total genius, was crippled by lack of development funds. It was a unique, world beating aircraft and if properly invested in, the concept would still be hard to beat. As for Nimrod, remember, the AW-3 was being developed using airframe that first flew in the 50's and the cost overruns were horrific! Mind you, I find it ironic that in the period before AWACS, we went back to relying on the Shackleton. The "Flying nissen hut" an aircraft that traced it's history back to the incomparable Lancaster! Part of the problem with the British aircraft industry is the Americans. They really don't want anyone else to build good aircraft. Look at what they did to the Avro Arrow programme in Canada, the first time Concorde crashed, (caused by parts falling off an American aircraft) the FAA jumped on it and took it out! All because they couldn't compete. Fortunately, with our European partners we can still build world class aircraft such as Typhoon 2, Tornado, Merlin helicopters etc. Also ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE can touch Rolls Royce aeroengines!

Here; in a 21st century context! For comprehensive contingencies managing! "Civil defense is emergency [contingencies] management!"(EMI / FEMA)! FEMA recommends we maintain secondary EOCs (Emergency / [contingencies] Operations Centers)! "We" can use that ! To build our own! And; "We" don't need anybody's permission! The suggested name must equal it's goal, mission, and objective s! I highly recommend, the name: DES Support Systems! More later. (Imagine a NASA control center scattered around us, with hands-on within academics! ) Start with, we millions of Vets, for a quick backbone! We are civilians, who know stuff, like tactics, strategies, a professional system! (And; I might add, there's a reason most of us departed after our first tour = hate for anything smelling like tyranny... bullies holding power !!!) This is the contingencies management system FEMA recommends, from studies into ages of the obvious! Make it a logistics / liaison NGO! With a matrix organizational structure! To provide us with an easy projects management capability, where we can all pick our areas of interest, and can contribute our voices!.. From within a Project (eg, voting), "we" can then choose a Mission area to study, and to contribute (who, when, where, what, why, how...)! Reviving this system will restore oversight for "We"!.. = Project Whistles Blower - to install a buffer! = A place to speak our minds, in complete continuous safety, with folks we chose to be available trusted options, to represent them, as middle buffers, who work to resolve issues. Not appointed by gov, like what gov usually sends "to help!" Do you know, the spy saying, something like "safety being close in enemies midst, among them!" Thus; the legally accepted way! "DES" ... Support Systems "Disaster & Emergency Services" (= gov / "Professional Responders"). While;... ... We can be the "Support Systems" (thus; access, again!)! However, it's for humans, which means, inclusion! Thus; all !!! (I recommend a movie, to help with understanding. While the movie excludes "politicians", our's can not! "We" must stomp ego out it ... = no titles, labels, etc. When the movie ends, I invite you to help me to create this system!? I suppose, in a great way, that "We" can take up where they left off!? "Meet John Doe" W/ Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwick...) Note this! DHS is potentially illegal, because it's built on "the Civil Defense Act of 1950." Which states nothing of the private sector! Thus; along the way, we got lazy and let gov take over our responsibilities in "civil defense!" And; bad leaders have turned it into an armed paper tiger, against us, in the name of emergency management! Also note, the old 1964 Civil Defense manuals! Thus; "active and passive civil defense being crucial components of national security posture!" - "active" = "armed" "Minute..." - "passive" = facilities, Coms, etc. Thus; I highly recommend the Swiss example, built into our republic! Another hole (the gapping hole, the way in) FEMA is desperately trying to get folks involved in community emergency management, to help manage all disasters! They stated the creation of the CEM Comprehensive Emergency Management = (Cyclically phased: preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation) And; The IEMS = "Integrated Emergency Management System!" Which is their plea for "all sectors to be involved: public, private, and government"! (Find a dictionary: - "civil" = non military, non police, non eclesia, ...! - "civil defense"...!) However; the concept! "Minute man, woman, kid, elder" = neighborhood incident management ! = comprehensive contingencies management Bring it into a 21st century context! Among us! To provide a simple basic way to have voice! "A well regulated [contingencies management system] being necessary to the [national security posture] of a free state, the right of the people to [employ a Swiss type system won't likely be] infringed!" [Note: I'm a Veteran '73-78, age 64, but I have not ever owned a firearm! Thus; I can't be call militia, since such is kind of a prerequisite... ! ... Or not??? I managed Armories, so l must claim, knowledge and experience, thereof! Nevertheless; stand the f... by, if "My Lady's" liberty is threatened! I'd rather do so through our accepted legal way to do so!) This is the only way, to be accepted by DES, for us to gain complete access! "Their" system actually belongs to "civil defense"! Look into the different titles it's had, since the 1940s! Read the dissertation about it, by: Boyce Wayne Blanchard. And; his ride in FEMA. You know one thing that always seems to confuse me The British had more fire power. (700-746) But The Germans had more planes. (1000) if some could make sure I got these numbers correct I would be very thankful

Really pilots where the issue. Some with less than ten hours. At one point some German pilots got little sleep. I don't have a source, you'll have to look it up.
