gotta love the planer boards. I love fishing them. one can get closer to shore with a planer board as well, keeping the boat at a deeper depth farther out.

I just found this great video of yours Kerry! This is my first year fishing for Gerrard Rainbow on Lake Pend Oreille (Idaho). Your video was very helpful in getting my planer board set up. Now I'm just trying to figure out the science behind trolling with Bucktail Flys. Yikes! So many variables, so much to learn. By chance did you ever get around to doing a video on trolling with flys? Thanks again!

Those boards are massive! My grandpa invented a side planer that’s small on your line and realeases when fish hits, and it can pull huge flashers, I have seen this set up before, fish tangles up on planer board line, any waves board flips over and makes a mess out of your lines

Thanks for the vid, beautiful place you are! Wondering what the fastest speed you can troll these boards at. Im considering using them in saltwater trolling for pelagic fish. Hoping to troll bewtween 2-6 knots Woud really apreciate your reply.
@fishoncanada

We have trolled with the planer boards at a variety of speeds. Mostly from 1.5mph - 4.0mph. But, I'm sure you could troll faster with them. Might just have to adjust the point of connection so as not to allow the board to jump too much.

chris macdonald on Kootenay Lake, we’re lucky to not see a tremendous amount of boat traffic and don’t seem to have a problem. But I could see how it could create some troubles on a busy lake. Especially with seadoos and ski boats running around.

Helpfull vid, whatabout multiple lines and you get a strike on the outer (closest to planer) line rod. And you run 3 rods on each side. Do you take 2 rods in and start the drill? If not how do you re-setup?
@buckeye6256
@buckeye6256 5 жыл бұрын
masomaf you just pull the rod out the holder and it a quick jerk to free the line from the clip. Then what about 5 seconds and start reeling in. This lets the line go back and clear the other lines.
@fishoncanada
@fishoncanada 5 жыл бұрын
When things are running smoothly and the outside line gets a fish, we would 1) let the fish take some drag and that line will now fall behind the inside lines and should come right up the middle behind the boat. 2) I'll let the inside lines out farther on the planer line while fighting the fish. 3) after landing the fish, I'll let my line out behind the boat again and clip it on the planer line (now it's the inside line)

When the clips pop, do you have to drag in the board to get them back? Or do you just keep a ton of clips on hand? I run inline boards, but this looks like a good option as well
@johnhornsby6759
@johnhornsby6759 3 жыл бұрын
I usually have a lot of them on hand. That's prevents you from having to pull it in until the end of the day
@fishoncanada
@fishoncanada 3 жыл бұрын
just keep putting a new clip on every time. And if we run out of clips, well, thats a good thing. We just wind it in and start again.
@rongreen1199
@rongreen1199 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer these boards. Start with twice as many clips as you run planer rods and you will have more than enough for most cases. When you find yourself running out then get a few more on your next trip to the goodie store. Soon you will find you have more than enough without overspending. . Say you run 3 lines on each side for a total of 6. If you have 6 extra then you will need to catch 12 fish on the planer boards before you run out. Thats a lot of fish. See what I mean?

It appears that the planer board shown is not offset ie the boards are parallel and lined up. How does this affect stability compared to the offset ones if at all?

hi Kerry, New to your Channel and would like to try your planer boards. Do you know of and diy plans similar to yours? I've tried others and some have even dove to the bottom in rough water. Not good luck so far.
@fishoncanada
@fishoncanada Жыл бұрын
I purchased my original boards from a local woodworker and have modified and built a bunch of spare planer boards for back up. There are some good plans online. As far as your boards diving to the bottom, that usually only happens when they are flipped upside down. Maybe add some weight to the bottom of the board as a counter balance, to help prevent it from flipping.

@@mrfixer987 no weight added to the bucktails, although you can purchase some with a weighted head, which will run about 3 -5 ft down. I use unweighted so my flies skip along the surface
