Planer/Sander Flip Cart... By Fisher's Shop

In this video I build a flip cart for my Planer and spindle sander. I used the plans and video by Fisher's shop. This cart is super clever. It can only rotate 180 degrees, allowing for power to to be supplied to both tools without interruption. It was easy to build and I'm thrilled to add this piece of organization to my shop!
I built this cart, but I cannot take the credit for the design. I saw a video by "Fisher's shop" and I didn't think I could improve on his design. I bought his plans and built the cart according to it. If you decide to build this cart, please support Fisher's shop by watching his video here...

I built Fisher's cart too. Great design! I made some mods to the design to fit my specific needs, but the design is solid. 1. Used 7/8" washers instead of pipe flanges at the pivot points. Drilled 4 holes in each and mounted with screws 2. Added an axle and 8" wheels on the rear and a retracting/locking handle so I can tip it and move it like a two wheel dolly. I needed this so I could get it out on the driveway and back into my garage when needed. 3. Instead of a 15A power strip, I put in an electrical box with a 20A outlet and a 15' 12 AWG cord to help prevent low voltage due to voltage drop on lighter AWG cord.

I was curious about your comment on Fisher's sense of humor, so I tracked that video down. You were so right! The best part is just how deadpan his sense of humor is. Especially liked his comment about wiring the new plug on while its plugged in and you're standing in a bath tub full of water. Oh, and I like your build too! Good video!

In the process of building my own. Really appreciate the detailed plans and video. For me it made sense to start with the tool platform to guide dimension of the base, shelf, etc. And I decided to add a flat washer, which also affected those measurements.

Yep...I built two of these from Fisher's Shop plans.....I love it. Chopsaw/table saw on one, drill press/band saw on the other ( I had to change a couple dimension to accomodate the height of the drill press & bandsaws).

I am going to make a flip chart for my router and spindle sander, and this video has given me ideas about details that I would have missed. Thanks a lot. However, being this set up a permanent thing (or so I would think,) I wouldn’t have bothered in keeping the power cords as they are, I would have cut them to exact length, connected them in parallel and saved the hassle of having to install a double socket plus the problem you encountered of the plug not passing through the flange. May sound a bit radical but I doubt you’ll ever disassemble this again unless one of the machines breaks down or has to be substituted. Great job overall and thanks again for taking the time to make the video.

Nice build. I really like the idea of putting an outlet in there instead of a power strip, especially with a Dewalt 735 which routinely operates over 30 amps. I would definitely use 10 AWG extension cord wire for my build. But, between you and the Fischer video, I think I have my flip cart plan. Thanks

I have identical tools and like Fisher's design as well. Will be adding height and width and braces. Side attached wheels could lower overall height to gain some stability. I appreciated your contributions to this design, and have subscribed to your channel for more.

Better use a 30" long 1" black pipe with flanges on the outside or else your sides with start to spread apart. Pivot can not rotate at all and must be structurally integral to both sides to support heavy loads.

I’ve got the same planer and sander. Watched Fisher’s video a couple of times, and now yours. Think I’m gonna give this a shot. My only complaint would be not being able to store the planer attachments since they fall out.

you could do a little hack to keep the knob on. it wont look the best but if you want to you could cut part of the wood on the side only were it would travel as it rotates and then put a piece of plywood over the cut part on the outside to give it back the strength. its just an idea. good build

Am thinking on making this same cart. Concerned about the strength of the sidewalls myself. Will probably make each wall a sandwich of 4 vertical 2x2’s and plywood glued on each side. Maybe a little more work and cost but a lot of peace of mind.

I have the exact same planer and sander and after looking at Fisher's video was planning to make the same. Glad to learn the dimension changes which I need to make from your build. I guess you have been using it for sometime now. How do you like it? Is it stable enough to plane? Any other adjustment or enhancement you think one should do? Do you have the plans for your build by any chance?

I use the planner constantly with it and I have no problems. It's pretty darn stable, but if course, the taller you make it, the less stable it is. Yes, there's one modification I'd like to make to improve the rigidness of it. Along the front two bottom corners, just above the drawer, I want to make a couple triangles to screw into the sides and the horizontal piece above the drawer. This would stiffen it up quite a bit. If only be able to do it on the front and not the back because the planner swings through the back side and there's not much room for the triangles. I hope I made some sort of sense. As for plans... i don't have any. I built it directly off the Fisher plans except for the added height. I wouldn't make plans for it because it would not be fair to Fisher. It's his creation and I don't want to take credit for it. I would always like to encourage folks to buy his plans. It's a measly $5. I might start making plans for other projects in the future. I've never tried to sell plans. I'm kinda new at this and not very good at it. Hope you get yours built and it serves you well.

I think if I want to add both at front and back I will need to make it more wider so after the triangles there is enough clearance for the tool to rotate. What do you think ?

I'm looking at this build for: 1. a Dewalt 735x that weighs 90+ pounds and 2. a Mahuda 8" Jointer that weighs 65 pounds. That also changes the dimensions a couple of inches. I'm concerned about the weight. Had thought about a maple stile along the center of the outside to support the pipe and to use a 3/4" pipe instead of 1/2". Is a single sheet of 3/4" enough to bolt on that kind of weight? Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if the weight on my planer, but it's not far off from yours. It has no problem supporting this weight, and I feel pretty confident that I could double the weight on it and it would not be a problem. As for the pipe, don't bother with 3/4. You have to look at where the force is being applied in it. It's basically a shear force right between the wall outside walls and the rotating platform. You wouldn't be able to shear that pipe with a 20 tin hydraulic press. All the weight is being supported on the ends... like in about half an inch of pipe. Good luck breaking that. As for the plywood... kinda the same thing... basically the pipe is trying to rip down the length of the plywood wall. I don't know how much force it would take to do that, but it's probably in the thousands of pounds. Now you might get some marring of the plywood over time. If you're concerned about that, i think a good solution would be to drill the hole in the plywood a little bigger and put in some sort of a brass bushing that could be more wear resistant. That way, the pipe rides in brass, not wood. Another thing... i built mine a bit taller because I needed the clearance for my planer. I'd say... build the thing a short as your equipment will allow. I'm more concerned with the sides trying to spread out since they are really only attached at the bottom. I'm going to be adding a triangle support at the bottom where the sides meet the top of the drawer enclosure. I hope some of this made sense. It's hard to picture with just words and no illustration. Let me know what you end up doing!

How stable is the cabinet, when in use? I think wheels on the side, compared to underneath, would bring alot more stability.

Sweet build! I'll make the same one in a couple of days with Fisher's plan. I have the same ridgid sander and planer too. Did you made changes to the width of the flip top too for the Ridgid planer? I check and thought I had to add 4 inches to the height of the sides and 2 inches to the width of the flip top and bottom, but I found you video after I made my calculations and it seems like you only added 2.5 inches to the height. Thank you!

Yeah, I only added to the height. And it does work... however... if I had it to do over, I'd make it a tad wider. In order for it to work, I had to remove the knob on the lower right because the knob wouldn't clear. Not a big deal though.

I am considering making the width of the Flip cart bottom to 27 1/2" and flip cart side height to 34 1/4 like you mentioned. Wondering if those dimensions worked out for you.

How do you get the double image in your videos?

I use premiere pro to edit videos. The camera is put on a tripod and cannot move. Then two separate videos are shot without moving the camera. Then the two videos are stacked on top of one another so they are both playing at the same time. Then I use a mask effect to draw a line between the two videos so half the screen is one video and the other half is the other video. It's actually way too much to explain here in a text.
