The Oregon Coast Scenic started in 2003, when the Port of Tillamook Bay offered Scott Wickert the opportunity to bring his Curtiss #2 Heisler to Garibaldi to run weekend steam train excursions. Prior to that, POTB ran an RDC excursion train called the Oregon Coast Explorer between Garibaldi, Rockaway Beach and Wheeler, and built passenger shelters in those towns for the service which OCSR now uses for its trains. OCSR broke off as its own entity in 2006 and became fully independent from POTB, and in the winter of 2007 a severe storm washed out several miles of track in the Salmonberry River Canyon in the Coast Range, which POTB opted not to repair and thus the freight railroad shut down. Since then OCSR is the sole operator of the tracks which it leases from POTB and is responsible for maintaining between the former Tillamook Air Station and Enright, a point five miles up the Salmonberry Canyon and just west of the major washouts. OCSR has reopened the line as far as Salmonberry, at the entrance to the Salmonberry Canyon where the Salmonberry River flows into the Nehalem River, and has run some charter trips to there as well as south toward Tillamook. The Wilson River coach, along with a few identical coaches, were acquired from the defunct Yreka Western Railroad in Northern California, and have been moved to Tillamook to be restored as demand requires. Their two RDC cars were from the POTB’s Oregon Coast Explorer train and had their tractive motors removed prior to beginning service on OCSR. The GN F7 belonged to Doyle McCormick, the one who led the SP 4449 restoration, and had been stranded in Garibaldi after the 2007 storm so OCSR acquired it. The GP9 101 was painted as a Holstein cow by POTB to pay tribute to Tillamook’s dairy industry. OCSR has acquired a few more steam locomotives since this was filmed, including 2-8-2 Polson #2 from Wisconsin. There’s a group called the Salmonberry Trail Coalition working to convert the unused track over the Coast Range into a non-motorized trail that would parallel the active OCSR tracks from Tillamook to at least Salmonberry.

Love the Norfolk and Western part used to work on the N&W and its sucessor and Canadian Pacific railroad.

When I see these massive and impressive layouts I always have to ask the question as to what will happen to them after the people who put their Heart and souls into them have passed on ?

Locomotive #25 on the Oregon Coast Railroad was used in the movie, "Stand by Me," in the scene where the boys cross the trestle
