Going from N64 to this...had to have been a treat for these people. and others who bought a GameCube. One of the best systems ever.

One thing that still amazes me about the GameCube and blew me away as a college student is the sound quality. The GameCube has an amazing sound chip, and when connected to a good stereo or home theatre (I had a Philips LX 3600D) it sounded grand. The sound was far better on GameCube and more games supported surround sound with Dolby Pro Logic II, which still sounds very immersive to this day.

thanks for raising this point, as someone studying audio in college i felt the need to pick up a gamecube just so i could immerse myself in the digital audio conversion tech that it offered.

I think the Luigi’s Mansion one was my favorite because it managed to heavily impact 3 events, SpaceWorld 2000/01 and this event. It sounds like it had like very good first impressions when revealed like 3 times, and I can tell it caught the eyes of many. Especially the sudden Luigi clips that made people roll on the floor. Hell, me and my dad actually beat the first game in 2017 and there’s just something about the first game that’s amazing. The demo build had a really good impression and then the final game was just exploding with dozens of great gameplay and ideas. And it now has like 3 mainline games and a few remasters, that is so avant-garde right there.

The fan reception was amazing. I can almost imagine being there, having no idea what the video is, you see Mario, then you see Link... suddenly the screen flashes the title of the SEQUEL to Super Smash Bros for like 0.0001 seconds and then cuts back to Kirby and Pikachu entering into it. I totally know why they responded that way. That whole video was masterfully made.

Pretty weird how every generational leap until the Gamecube/ps2 era was so huge, like compare ssb on the 64 to melee or a ps1 tomb raider to god of war, it's a whole world of difference. Nowadays new generations gives us better textures, performance and more stuff on screen but it's just not that big deal tbh. We also rarely see historical defining titles for gaming like Mario 64, Tloz OoT, Metal gear solid, resident evil 1 and 4, Devil May Cry, Halo, Silent Hill 2, Half life, Shemue, Metroid prime... I cannot think of many games from xbox360/ps3/Wii and onward which broke as many boundaries. The Best example being probably only Minecraft.

1) I have heard in business class that if you are successful in something, you should still be unsatisfied. They became the market leader by catering to the majority of the gaming market (kids, familys, hardcore fans, buyers of every console). The only persons they sold to the least were the graphical enthusiasts. Therefore, this is their goal for next gen. A company must always be looking for ways to improve itself. 2) Lack of innovation and more focus on power (sounds familiar) did the GC in.
