This game is basically all of my favorite aesthetic aspects in video games put into one. The ps1 pre rendered cutscenes, the uncanny dog grinch character designs, the music. The vocal track that is literally just a guy saying "do do do do" was like some artistic awakening. You can just do that? Make a track of a guy singing in an empty room? It's so weird that this got a translation but it was a welcome surprise

He only played a small portion of the game, but it was enough to make me interested in playing it (since I am interested in literally ANY RPG that never saw the light of day outside Japan). Despite the weirdness of it, it became one of the most memorable games I've played on the PS1.

Jung is oft over stated as an influence in contemporary Western theology. Clearly some here for sure but he wasn't the revolutionary conventional wisdom likes to suggest. Many of the works that inspired him are far more interesting reads in many aspects. Much in the way modern nihilism is so acutely fixated on nietzieche, despite the likes of Spinoza being far closer to imagined ubermensch than Fred. Ancient Eastern theory is startling in how easy some of their thinkers can be compared with jungs archetypes and the Buddhist tradition as a whole had many writers who explored the modes of self and collective unconscious as jung did long before Freud. More effort in translation is needed. But there a rich world of writing to explore have not had the pleasure to do so already and are motivated to so, I am confident one would find the experience rewarding. Edit: also new sub great video. Reminds me of thorHH in style and thats a major compliment from me, being a big fan of his channel. Eager to work through the backlog here.

Planet Laika is close to my heart, having fallen in love with the idea when I was younger after coming across a short review in an American magazine when it first came out. I actually managed to get a hold of a copy of the game a few years later, and attempted a (very confusing) blind playthrough of it with almost no knowledge of Japanese. The translation release a few years back felt like a personal gift, and I was surprised by how funny and charming the game manages to be despite its very dark themes. It's definitely one of my favorite games despite its flaws, and it was so wonderful to hear someone talk about it as passionately as you do here. ❤

I too am one of those people who loves weird or particular stuff, that instead of simply running behind the consumers' preferences it isn't afraid of showing what the authors wanted to make. Another gem, dredged from the depths of obscurity, to call home on your channel. The way you talk about this game is fascinating, like it almost doesn't exist just from the sheer scope and ambition of its themes, narrative, mechanics and subject matter; there's hidden gems and then there's what you bring to the table! I know I've probably said it before but the PS1 and 2 (more so 1) era is a trove of concepts and ideas that, ironically, are fresher and more engaging than almost anything in the medium in the past decade. I think the reason for that was that the medium, while trying to find it, was free of convention. There wasn't a standard for 'this is how it should control and play and feel', thereby allowing games to truly *be*, and I feel like your vid and views and the game itself, really speaks to that creative phenomenon. I don't know if that makes sense but it's like, older games like this stray so far from convention not because it was trying to, but because there were no conventions and ideas to stray from in the first place, resulting in a unique and incidental piece of art within the medium. Someday, somehow, I hope I'll get around to playing this because it sounds unlike anything I've ever experienced or even heard of. Your vids are always nothing short of thought-provoking and I love the way you perfectly entwine your views and thoughts on the medium as a whole with the games that you cover. Love the vid, can't wait to see what you come up with next! :)

Those final words really touched my heart. The final line was bursting with Resonant Power. I'm sad that discourse over video games, or even just media in general, has this stain of 'objectivity' on it. There are aspects that we love and hate and like and are middling on in everything we consume, and as much as we try to impress our opinions on other people, we cant MAKE them feel how we do about something. Even if it comes from a genuine love of it. I hope to finish this game some time, I'm gonna start soon. I never would have heard of it before tonight. I did notice a couple of references to at least one space epic in those final minutes, I hope to find more . I came here in search of answers for Planet Laika but there are still questions that remain; such as are these even real memories the characters experience? There are several references to hallucination of past events, and if the past personalities they knew are not distorted or twisted by the Evil Mind's delusions that Commander October (whose name alludes to the October revolution) claims over intercom from Earth aren't truly real. It seems too coincidental for each character to each have such extreme memories. Yet although Captain Tadler is said to have actually known a Chloe back on earth in passing by April who corroborated one of the captain's hallucinations... We are also not quite sure why the colonists on Mars don't themselves experience hallucinations or are they immune to it? Delusional though they are, their egos distorted inwardly, yet how did the main characters of the crew who go to explore all appear to be intact in their egos enough to truly become astronauts and very functional for the level of paralysis and mental disassociation one would have expected their personality faculties to have had them undergo while still on Earth. Was that too another delusion, and were they only astronauts as part of the overall hallucination? Or was there just more Good Energy on Earth or did Mars make them unable to maintain the adjustment to reality - professionally envied by the outcasts and exiles - and the Freudian ego-principle in its balance with social responsibility, higher class careers as astronauts before Mars makes them go AWOL? And if they indeed knew about these delusions, as is said, why did they choose willingly to enter into Mars' atmospheric field without some form of psychological protection?

@@maraganger I relate a lot to the idea that you don't need to justify something as perfect to enjoy it, that sometimes you can just find yourself adoring an imperfect mess and it needs no justification. A lot of my favourites -- The Silver Case, Travis Strikes Again, Moon, Zero Escape, a good chunk of the Sonic franchise - they aren't objectively perfect games that will make a quadrillion wulongs in the Western market. But I also love them, and not often in spite of their flaws but _because_ of them. It's one of the reasons I stopped watching the ProCrastinators Podcast; if someone wasn't out there asserting something was shit because the internet said so, then it was another person laughing and apologizing for liking something the others thought was lame. It was painful. It was sophomoric, and embarrassing. If you love something, if something means a lot to you, just love it. It doesn't need to be the most innovatively reverse-engineered Enjoyment MachineTM on Earth. It doesn't need to get perfect scores on its Game Design 101 exam. The fact that it strikes a chord with you, is enough justification. The themes and expressions you highlighted through Laika were very interesting too. Inspiring, almost. It's right up my alley. So, I'll have to check it out later. Yeah, this was a good watch. My intuition was right. I've needed more perspectives like this, so I'm looking forward to see your channel grow in the near future. I just found this channel and I'm 1 minute 53 seconds into this video and you already know what I like. That intro alone perfectly sums up why I have loved digging through large amounts of obscure media for most of my life. This was especially true during the early otts because that whole era when the internet was still in its primordial infancy when garage sales and more niche ways of accessing content that is not as available to the general public apart from your standard retail was quite the time period. Now that the Internet is as colossal as it is there's so much media that is yet to be discovered which defies the conventional norms, heck I found my musical taste which fits that very definition just by going online. I've yet to watch the rest of this video but if you are reading this you already are slowly becoming one of my new fav channels even though I merely just dropped by. You're next to hazel and ThorHighHeels content, maybe a fusion of the two. I can't wait to see what Planet Laika has in store. Thank you so much and wonderful job so far on this one.
