Planet of the Apes is a 1968 epic science fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner based on the novel La planète des singes by Pierre Boulle. The film stars Charlton Heston and features Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, veteran Shakespearean actor Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly and Linda Harrison. The script was originally written by Rod Serling but had many rewrites before eventually being made.
The film was ground-breaking for its prosthetic makeup techniques by artist John Chambers, and was well received by critics and audiences, launching a film franchise, including four sequels, as well as a short lived television show, animated series, comic books, various merchandising, and eventually a remake in 2001. Roddy McDowall, in particular, had a long-running relationship with the Apes series, appearing in the original series of five films (one only via stock footage from an earlier film), and also in the television series.
Most of the early scenes of a desert-like terrain were shot in northern Arizona near the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon and other locations near Page, Arizona
Most scenes of the ape village, interiors and exteriors, were filmed on the Fox Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park, northwest of Los Angeles, essentially the backlot of 20th Century Fox.
The concluding beach scenes were filmed on a stretch of California seacoast between Malibu and Oxnard with cliffs that towered 130 feet above the shore. Reaching the beach on foot was virtually impossible, so cast, crew, film equipment, and even horses had to be lowered in by helicopter.
The remains of the Statue of Liberty were shot in a secluded cove on the far eastern end of Westward Beach, between Zuma Beach and Point Dume in Malibu.
As noted in the documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes,] the special effect shot of the half-buried statue was achieved by seamlessly blending a matte painting with existing cliffs.

That was really awesome. I saw the original Planet of the Apes when I was 13 at the movie theater. It was like Star Wars for me. I saw it several times. And then I watched the next four in the series, going to each one repeatedly.

My dad and his friend were boating at lake Powell in 68. They came across the spaceship and looked inside at the valves and pipes used to sink it. Then they saw people on the shore and went to inquire. The y encountered the film crew who told them about the movie. None of the actors were there at the time.

The hatch that blew off is on the floor on Lake Powell still as far as I know. Then they re-used the ship on sequels and the TV show - after Escape From POA, the nose cone was a different color because when it "washed ashore" in Escape in Malibu it broke from the tow lines and smacked into those rocks forcing quick fix on the cone. As far as I know nobody knows what happened to that dart shaped steel prop - collector buy or rust at scrapyard.....🗼

What a great job on this, it’s fantastic, I see you posted this 9 years ago, so I may be a little late on the compliments. I remember going to see this film when I was 11 when it first came out, I went by myself because none of my friends would go. To me this is the one that matters, there’s many sequels, and it was done again years later, but this is for me the best one, way ahead of it’s time.

Had a semi sealed off crying room under the balcony for moms and infants. Can still smell the urine when I think about it. Ugh... Vividly remember everything about that movie, and the 2nd one too, Return to the planet of the apes. This video was spot on with scene fades in and out. We'll done you damn dirty ape! P.S. Vacationed at Grand Canyon and flew to Page AZ for day excursion. Came in over Lake Powell. This is a fantastic video of the making of one of the BEST SCI FI FILMS ever made....I went to Lake Powell first time in 1970, and every summer for the next 42 years, many times. My good friend Wally, on a fishing trip, witnessed the filming at Last Change Bay on Lake Powell and told us about it. I have every version on film/tape/disc since then. The BlueRay is just astounding, and the music was and is a huge part of the film.. I cannot describe the audience reaction in the theatre back in '68; it was shock, amazement. I saw it at least 5 times, including at a Drive In...THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO MR. ATTIA!! will pass it on to all my friends.

@SteveSputnik
@SteveSputnik 3 жыл бұрын
The average sea rise over the past five decades wouldn't be measurable with the naked eye, especially, as Rui points out, when the tide might be at a different point to what it was when the movie was shot. Take into account such things as weather variations, tide cycles , time of the year etc. and the fact that both pieces of film are long-shots and it would be ridiculous to use the latter piece of film as evidence that sea levels aren't rising. A rise of 2" wouldn't be noticeable with the naked eye, but it would be significant if it marked a trend.

EXTREMELY WELL DONE......I love this sort of thing, as I've always been a fan of this movie ever since the day I first watched it just before I turned 15 in 1968.......I lived in Huntington Park, California at that time and saw the movie there on Pacific Boulevard either at the Warner Theater or at the California Theater......I have also always been a futurist and now realize at my age of almost 67 during this Coronavirus pandemic that THE BEST YEARS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAVE NOW PASSED INTO THE DISTANT PAST.......I arrived in California via Spain in 1963 from having been a rich kid in Cuba, and I don't need an elephant three feet away to see it......Humanity's days are numbered, and movies such as Planet of the Apes have a very strong meaning for those of us who can think and reason........CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS JOB WELL DONE......César M. González Betancourt, ( Sierra Cuban on You Tube ) Miami, Florida, Estados Unidos de América.......PROUD UNITED STATES MARINES DAD......AND MOM TOO.

Thanks! When I moved to Dallas, one of the first things I did was to track down and visited all the filming sites in Dallas, TX for Robo Cop. Wish I had filmed it like you do for various movies.

LOVE this movie!! J"ADORE ce film. Appelez-moi old-fashionned quand ça vient aux films, mais j'assume. La qualité de ce film, la musique et tout, pour 1968,... c'est assez extraordinaire!
