The envelope is ejected leaving only the core. This is the basic story, but how accurate is it? Is there variation as with standard candles, so we might expect some of the envelope to remain or the core to boil away, or is this for some reason a pretty exacting process?

A Planetary Nebula is neither. You could argue they're a different kind of nebula, but certainly not planetary in any way.

In a weak (18th century) telescope, they look like Jupiter. Yes it's dumb, but there it is.
