Germany’s iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife is the gold-standard for sports car development. And the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is the first car from an American brand to complete a lap in under seven minutes.
Driven by Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller, the 815-horsepower Mustang GTD lapped the circuit nicknamed “The Green Hell” in an officially certified 6:57:685. It’s the fifth fastest time by a stock production sports car according to the Nürburgring’s official records and Mustang GTD is only the sixth vehicle in that class to break the seven-minute barrier.
The time delivers on the goal laid out by CEO Jim Farley at the Mustang GTD’s debut in August 2023.
Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring success is due to the work of a small, dedicated team of engineers and designers who worked tirelessly over the course of two years to turn the Mustang GT3 race car into the first-ever Mustang supercar. Ford documented their efforts in the run up to the timed Nürburgring run in The Road To The Ring, a 13-minute documentary that covers the challenge, drama, and excitement of developing Mustang GTD.
Mustang GTD represents the apex of Mustang performance and benefits from lessons learned by the Ford Performance Motorsports and Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT3 program, in particular around aerodynamics and setup for tracks such as the Nürburgring. However, Mustang GTD isn’t subject to the rules and regulations of GT3 racing, which prohibit much of the technology that allow a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap.
That includes carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a supercharger, and semi-active suspension. A carbon-fiber body is familiar from GT3 racing, and while the Mustang GTD that completed the sub-seven-minute lap was entirely stock, it did include motorsports-derived safety gear mandated by the Nürburgring. That includes a competition seat with a five-point harness and a roll cage.

Considering it doesn't need to keep a turbo spooled, makes sense. My Hyundai's pops don't allow my turbo to fall out of positive pressure when driving quick.

just thinking about how Tesla bragged about a 7:23 on the Nordschleife after watching this. Also thinking about how most of the advantage this car had was just excellent grip, soft steering, and alot of Horsepower. So basically it doesnt even take a well-tuned racecar, it really just takes a built motor, some extra wide tires, a softer steering ratio, and a full tank of gas, and that's all you need to beat a $100,000 premium luxury EV on the ring.
@ktakashismith
@ktakashismith 7 күн бұрын
So you just need a $325,000 purpose-built track car, and you can beat a $100,000 luxury car? Wow, pretty cool when you put it like that.
@DxWhoopingCrane
@DxWhoopingCrane 19 сағат бұрын
@@ktakashismith The guys point is stupid but what he was trying to say is that you could probably get similar results with a garage built car. I dont think what hes saying is necessarily true(dont know enough about running the ring) but I could see a group of experienced German weekend warriors with something like a used BMW 3/4 series and $30k getting some really incredible lap times or perhaps already do. Also, the main drawback to Tesla on the ring(and any non-sprint format motorsport) is the battery drain, the Tesla with their best battery drains half capacity with one lap on the ring, and reduced power output the longer it continues.

The Mustang was tied with the 2021 911 GT3 RS lap at Brunnchen, gained 1 second by the Audi gantry and another second by the next ‘Bilstein’ bridge. Top speed 301 kph. So that’s how it 2 seconds faster that the 911. The Mustang seems overpowered with a lot of coasting before braking.

$400k to be significantly slower than a GT2 RS, a GT3 RS, GT AMG Black series, and even a regular GT3 with what is effectively a race car. Amazing. Let that sink in. A $225k performance touring car from 2021 is faster around a track with 502hp than a "Ring Monster" that has 800hp.

Track had some wet/damp spots, which means there was also a lack of a freshly honed race line. Any record at this track should come with a track quality rating. Wait until they get a shot on a better day and you'll see at least 5 seconds come off of that time. :)

The Americans are starting to understand what makes a great sportscar and hats off to them. But to say they've beaten the Europeans on their own track is just nonsense. A GT3 with 300BHP less power was lapping over 10secs faster 6 years ago. It's a great effort from the Yanks but they're chest-beating a bit early.
