This is the most graphically appealing and data-rich of the several planets & stars comparison videos (hardly the best music, tho). Congratulations to its creator. However, i would point out that the planets are shown as much smaller than they really are relative to the Sun -- Jupiter's diameter is just over a tenth that of the Sun's. Since this video was produced, new measurements have determined that Betelgeuse is actually larger than Antares; otherwise, the star size lineup is accurate.

Nice animation to scale, I did one of the solar system with the plants in there orbits to scale but they were like dots in the end haha... its also worth pointing out that larger stars have larger habitable zones so the likely hood of there being more than one planet like earth in orbit is therefore higher ! ;-)

@isakilla1 =NOTE=- This video was made BEFORE "VY Canis Majoris" was listed as the largest known star, When this video was made 2006 by it's author JAXXrr, the star "VV Cephei A" was listed as the largest known star. as a side-note the sizes are an approximation VY Canis Majoris 1800 to 2100 Solar radii VV Cephei A 1600 to 1900 Solar radii it's strongly believed that Canis Majoris is the larger of the two however it's possible that Cephei has the greater radius

Sirius B is a white dwarf and it's mass is nearly equal to our Sun however it's size is about that of the Earth. (it's very dense!) Sirius A: the star featured in the video and is the brightest star that is seen from the Earth at night has the Stellar classification type A1V

IIRC they can measure the red shift of the light against the emission spectrum and estimate a temperature and a distance. The size can be determined from the color and temperature.

It's true that VY Canis Majoris (1800-2100 Solar radii) is thought to be larger then VV Cephei A (1600-1900 Solar radii) however there is some overlap VV Cephei A could be the larger of the two, please read the (more info) next to the video for more info on why VY Canis Majoris wasn't used at the time the video was made by jaxxrr

It's named after the nebula in which it's located, the Pistol Nebula (which is shaped like a pistol, I guess). It is indeed a weird star - it's one of the most massive known stars and is located near the center of the galaxy.

hrbear It is currently accepted that a dying star 4 solar masses and upwards would be massive enough to collapse in on itself and form a black hole. A lesser star such as our own sun lacks the mass and therefore gravity needed to create the intense pressures that cause black holes. Gravity kills solar mass = 1 sun

@blindandwatching17 жыл бұрын
There is a theoretical maximum size for a star. The fusion in the center reaches a point where it totally overcomes gravity and the whole thing explodes. Of course in a few thousand years you will probably be able to watch real stars go super-nova on pay-per-view.
@OmriGazitt14 жыл бұрын
Nice video... cool depiction of relative cosmic sizes. Some of the comparison figures appeared to be wrong though. Earth's diameter is approx 12800km. The sun's diameter is approx 1392000km. The ratio is more like 109 (i.e. the sun is 109 earth diameters), not the 342 earth diameters that the video quoted around 1:05. The same error (by the same margin) exists for VV Cephai at 2:20.
@Tigeron1a17 жыл бұрын
And youre right, the gravity of a star like that is probibly higher than that of the sun but still a great deal less than its volume sence the density of the vv Cephei is much less than its size. Shrunk down Im willing to bet it was the size of Rigel at one time.
@Hannah_Otis17 жыл бұрын

It's true the that the largest known star is VY Canis Majoris however this video was made before this was known, a star larger still maybe discovered in the near future. I invite you to read the addition information about this video that JAXXrr made in 2006 in the notes located where it reads (more info) in the upper right corner, thank you.
@xaiano79415 жыл бұрын
size does not directly relate to brightness (although obviously this is a factor) and has a lot more to do with mass and density of a star. Despite how big they are most of these are under 150 solar masses as the more massive a star is, the more energetic it is and the more it pushes the outer layers outward with the pressure of the light generated.
@petisnnake15 жыл бұрын
@ReXt)n07 "you can find out how big they are from the amount of light they projects" Incorrect. You find out how big they are based on the speed at which other stars move around it. The bigger the gravitational pull -> The bigger the speed -> The bigger the star.
@fieryspirit17 жыл бұрын
Pluto is a dwarf planet, along with Ceres and Eris. Their gravity is sufficient to have hydrostatic equilibrium and they aren`t satellites (moons, if you will). Eris is actually larger than Pluto and it`s orbit is further out than Pluto aswell. Ceres is found in the asteroid belt.

Temperature being related to how fast atoms are moving, it's also and more importantly the point where atoms don't move anymore. How do you make the atoms moving even less than atoms that are not moving at all ? Following the same principle, a maximum temperature could be in theory infinite but, in our universe, would be the temperature attained by a theoretical machine that uses all of the energy in the universe to convert it into heat and concentrate it in one point.

Yes,the size of these stars is hard imagine. If you scaled our earth to our sun and humans are like 5foot 9inches. Then if there were an earth like plant around VV Cephei and it was scaled like our earth is to our sun then that means if there were humans on that planet that they could be like 1000feet 9inches, the scale for everything could go up. Sorry for saying so much, I have alot to say about the universe we live in.

@jensypoops VV Cephei A, now the ≈ 2nd largest known star, If placed in the center of the solar system would likely extend past the orbit of Jupiter and approach that of Saturn. the largest known star VY Canis Majoris ( Assuming the ≈ upper size limit of 2100 solar radii,) If placed in the center of the solar system, radius would beyond the orbit of Saturn. btw Saturn's Minimum Distance from Earth is 1.2 billion km (746 million miles)!

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Question using the following 'assumptions' or estimates just for fun: Assuming the 1999 Hubble Survey estimate was accurate on the # of galaxies in the universe being around 125B (Billion), and the avg. galaxy size being only half of the Milky way's size being 50B stars, and that there is only 1 Intelligent species per 2000 stars, about how many Intelligent species could there be? Simple algebra , I know, but I just wanted to ask a few peers and talk about it. :) Comment back, Hoya

VY Canis Majoris is now the biggest. It takes 8 hours for light to go around its circumference. It would fill out our solar system if it replaced the sun to the point Saturn occupies now. The reason the stars looks as they are becoming smaller is because there is no way to make your computer monitor grow larger and larger, that why the video zooms out in order to give side by side comparisons, it's not like Mercury is the same size of the Sun you know.

(To put all of the matter in a point would require an infinite pressure, which would require an infinite amount of energy which we don't have) In simple terms there must be a maximum temperature for there is a limited amount of energy in our universe.
