Halifax is seemingly going through a growth spurt. Everywhere you turn, new buildings are under construction, often much taller than the structures they're replacing. Why is this happening? We think these are the 5 big reasons:
1:14 - Population Growth
2:31 - City Livin'
4:07 - Policy
5:42 - Profit Imperative
7:26 - Availability of Land
Part 1 of 4, this video is the first of the HALIFAX IN FLUX series, a collection of videos meant to educate and inform on Halifax's housing market, growth, prices, and opportunities for change.

I like the height of new building in the urban core. I feel that the Dartmouth and Halifax waterfront need to have tallest buildings in the city to form a unique skyline. Maybe a cluster of towers that looks like a tallship. There's also a private proposal to building the world's tallest lighthouse on devil's island in the mouth of the harbour, it would have a Maritime history museum and an observation deck and restaurant. Standing 175 meters tall, for comparison Fenwick tower or "The vuze" is 98 meters tall

But it's still not keeping up with the pace of growth we're seeing. Large tracks of land adjacent to highway 118 need to be suburban communities with planned public transportation. Highway 113 needs to be built to bypass Hammonds plains and directly connect with the 102 & 103 further out from the city.

I think with our growth right now we could easily be adding a Fenwick sized building every year or two. Maybe even a couple!

@@doggo2995 With how things are right now I'd say the market could easily support another four Fenwick towers today and now

@@Nicholas-ks8xp House prices are rising so fast we need to start building sky scrapers fast before the cheap charm of Halifax disappears before it even got started! If we can keep up with the demand for apartments Halifax is in for a good decade. But we need to start building.. NOW

Seems like there is a huge opportunity on the peninsula to allow buildings to go higher than three stories. My building is three stories and on other side of street and in behind my building are 10 story buildings so seems like an opportunity to all these low rise buildings to go higher.

Taller buildings, and more of them, are needed throughout the entire urban area of Halifax.

why?
@isaiahphillip4112
@isaiahphillip4112 Жыл бұрын
@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 Because there's not enough supply of housing and a 1 bedroom apartment costs 1600 in a province where the median income is like $40k.

@@isaiahphillip4112 rent was way way cheaper before halifax suddenly became a boomtown. building more tall ugly concrete sun shaders actually fuels rent increases, esp in a province that has a governmental history of mainly looking out for those that already have more than plenty. realising only about two years ago that ns has zero history of rent controls, it took me quite some time to actually absorb that obscene bit of information.

Philosophy of efficiency…? Praxis of efficiency!!! Surely this efficiency is needed, but if said theory has evolved into a criterion underpinning every decision, that is not “philosophy”.

Stupid remark, people from all over the world wish to come to Halifax. The young people from India that I have met adore Halifax and will find any reason to stay in Canada. Generally speaking they are lovely people. Education is just one reason.

it strikes me that this video is really just an attempt to justify some moneymen property developers' agendae.

Historically speaking, we get new housing when somebody (developer, builder or otherwise) can make money from doing it. We don't see that changing in the short or long term.
