planking a lapstrake boat

i watched as you ungainly tried to yank a broad plank out of the middle of the pile, and shaking my head in dismay at you, I said...."Yeah...that's just what I would likely do..."

Isn't that always the way! The board I want is always at the bottom of the pile 😆 Bit of a blast from the past here, we've been sailing this boat pretty hard for the past month or so 😎

Why use marine ply on the garboards but not on the first pair of broad strakes? Or vice versa? Or was it merely just using what you have?

The garboard is 15 inches wide at the bow and my planer is only 13. Also due to the shape cut into the bottom edge of the garboard by the curve of the bottom there is a lot of grain runout in the plank making it susceptible to cracking along the grain in the bow and stern plywood eliminates this issue, we're planking the rest in pine which is traditional building material and less/not prone to checking like un glassed marine ply.
