From afar people are advocates for homelessness but upfront they are all NIMBY. These are not new problems that area is dealing with. If the homeless people are to live in the shelter then they will no longer be unhoused. So saying 100 unhoused people are moving to Jack London is not accurate. Car break-ins in Downtown and the town have been going on for years let alone they are ran by car theft rings - not homeless people.

Whoever's idea this was should be fired -- especially to not inform local businesses. I've been to JLS more times than I care to admit. It is (or WAS) a tourist attraction with restaurants, a movie theater and the ferry to SF/Alameda. Who on earth will feel safe visiting now when Oakland already has a terrible reputation? That location makes ZERO sense for a homeless shelter. This will not help local businesses. Thanks Oakland.

Every few days they dump a stripped chassis on the road and the city dutifully hauls it away, The organization I work for tracked two of our stolen vans to homeless encampments in Oakland, so get out of here with that nonsense. The entire city planner for Oakland is full of it. There’s so many places to build homeless shelter but why in Jack London Square. The city planner is full of it. For example they limit the vehicle lane in International Blvd from 2 lanes to 1 lane keeping one entire lane for the bus only. They just intensify the traffic as the bus doesnt use it very often. It creates accidents as other drivers pull the vehicle out to use the bus lane. Oakland: no hope at all. Let it falls hard then.

The residents probably wouldn't have more than maybe hot plates and small refrigerators in their rooms, as installing dozens of new kitchens would cost a fortune. More likely, the city will just build a central kitchen somewhere on the premises and serve daily meals. The Alameda County Food Bank also operates a lot of food banks in Oakland; it wouldn't be too difficult to arrange a weekly delivery to the hotel.

I don't have statistics, but I don't think homeless people are breaking into cars. I've seen where it's people with cars who have someone on the street looking for worthy items, the car comes up and they smash and grab and jump in the car and are gone in less than a minute. Also understand business owner concerns. Will there be services provided for the homeless like food stamps, mental health services?

Great... and we just booked rooms at the Jack London Inn :/ We've stayed there before, not really a great place but it's a place to sleep none the less. We're just there to catch some Zzzz then take the ferry into the City. Jack London Square is actually a nice place from what we remember, but I know times changed a bit after Covid. Praying our windows don't get broken into, hell maybe we'll just leave the windows downs :/

Maybe to help them get back on their feet so they CAN take care of themselves. If you're struggling to pay rent, there are services for you too; you can apply for an EBT card, hit up your local food banks, and get low-income discounts on gas, electric, phone and internet service, and healthcare Catholic Charities will help you cover the rent in an emergency.

Another dumb decision by the city! Yes, JLS is one of the few places many still go to for a bit of entertainment and dining downtown. JLS has been doing a great job of holding events for families and visitors year-round. Why jeopardize that? Yes, shelters are needed, and there are multiple options along Broadway and other streets that aren't next to an entertainment square.
