The fetus part made me think of something that happened when I was a senior in high school. (Before I tell this story- I've always been pro-life, but I was more interested in the movement after I was done with school.) In 12th grade, I took a Health class called Parent Child Development. Part of that was learning about fetal development. So my male teacher was like: "The heart starts beating here, it grows here, it can kick here..." etc. When he paused, I slowly raised my hand with a smirk and slyly responded: "So, what you're saying is...this thing has a heartbeat, it's GROWING...and it can KICK...wow, it almost seems like this thing is ALIVE...and tearing it apart would be KILLING it...INT-TER-RES-TING." That was followed by some stunned, awkward silence. Like, you could FEEL the awkwardness in the room. My teacher broke the silence by quickly saying: "We're not going to get into that right now!" Not to be that person, but "fetus" in the classical period means offspring and did not have to refer to a specific age. It was infrequently used where we might today use baby, toddler, child. It was never used to my knowledge past adolescence, so the closer translation would be "child." (Or "offspring/young" as it is used for animals as well. However, by the imperial era, it had been used in two very popular and widespread medical "books" solely to refer to an unborn child, and from that point it is rarely used in any other context. (In it's original ancient usage, fetus was a noun referring to the act of childbirth itself, so "labor" now. Very neat to see the progression of language through time.)

In 1915, my grandmother was having trouble with her pregnancy, the local doctors encouraged her to abort the baby, but she refused to kill her soon to be born child. She was in an area where illegal, but "safe" abortions were performed. She told the doctors that "God could not forgive her for killing her baby, and she could not forgive herself." She was bonded with the child inside her, and she went on to give birth her third child in January of 1916. The baby was premature, but survived. My grandmother died less than one month after giving birth. That child grew up to become my mother, she had two children of which I am the oldest. I am married and my wife and I have two sons. Both are married and one has a son. So three generations later, my family is thriving thanks to the courage and strong faith that my grandmother had. My grandmother made a decision based on faith and the risks at the time, to keep her baby to term and risk her life in the process. My family is forever greatful to her for that. Now, if a woman chooses to terminate her pregnancy, and kill her baby, that's her option, but my faith tells me to thank God every day that I can live this life thanks to the faith of my grandmother.
