Figuring out my planner needs was fundamental in building my system.
My main, absolutely necessary need is the Seamless Flow of Information, both into and out of my planner and within the planner itself, amongst the sections. I don't want to have to think about where to put incoming information, and I shouldn't have to think about where to retrieve information when I need it.
I also need:
-- Quick capture of information: Reminders, the Drafts app, and Fantastical
-- A "Filtered" Yearly (finances and travel schedule)
-- Monthly (full year): out of the ordinary schedule things, game schedule, due dates, monthly task list, quarterly goals (not in a separate space or I forget about them), memory keeping
-- Weekly (full year is not a need but I like it): daily schedule for each person whose schedule I'm responsible for, day-specific tasks, due dates, weekly task list (which includes project tasks)
-- Daily: daily schedule broken down by drop off and pickup times, day/specific tasks, notes about what I did that day, journaling, blank space for whatever I need at a moment's notice
-- Projects: set up by their particular needs, currently active projects on sticky notes in the current monthly section
-- Tabs: quick access to information
-- Sticky notes: moving information easily, quick notes, printable sticky notes for specific needs
-- Portability: I use my planner more when it's always with me. The more I use it, the better the system becomes.
-- Options: Right now, my brain craves the ease in turning to a blank space and using it for whatever I need. My current setup accommodates that need in my Daily book.
-- Pockets: to keep spare sticky notes, my ruler, stickers, keepsakes
Wants:
-- Pretty things: some tasks just aren't fun to see written in your planner because you're dreading doing them. At least having a pretty space to do them in makes them a little more tolerable.
-- Photos: make my planner uniquely mine
-- These aesthetic things make my planner enjoyable. I take a few minutes every morning just to flip through my planner and simply enjoy it. I made a reel about it here: bit.ly/FirstFo...
-- A cover that feels good: I want to enjoy the material from which it is made, the weight of it, the size of it in my hand.
You can find your own planner needs in any number of ways, and I'm sure there are more than I'll offer here.
You can start with a blank book and only add the things you have decided you absolutely need. Then, as time, progresses, you can add or remove things as needed.
Starting with a predesigned system can also be a great place to start. Something from Franklin Covey, Filofax, or Day Designer is all set up and ready to use. Then you can add and remove things as you need.
Free printables are also a great way to jump start building your system. Philofaxy and Peanuts Planner Co offer great free printables if you'd like to start there.

Excellent system you have and it grew organically so now it fits perfectly with room for changes. I really like the idea of just sitting down and listing what I need my planner to do. Thanks for taking the time to film and share this! Enjoy the rest of your week!

That’s part of why I plan… making joy. If I’m having a tough time finding joy I make a tiny bit of my own. Planning also gives us a little something over which we have control, but not “bad” control, if that makes sense.

Love this small setup and have been tossing around the idea of trying it out. Is it a pocket or passport size? I'm a stay at home mom with kids in school so I don't need a planner per se since I don't have a job but I need my notebook to hold my monthly calendars/ budgets/spending, workouts, daily journaling and to-do's and meal plans for the week. I have tried every notebook out there and can't seem to find the one I want to use the most. I know I want a notebook that I can carry around with me at all times. Wondering if this size could work for me? I'm in a B6 Slim Cafe Notes now. What notebooks are you using in this video? Cover? Thanks :)

Carrie, you explained why you moved out of your rings into this new smaller set up with the two Moleskins but i wondered what caused you to leave your regular sized TNs as you were in that size and model of TN for awhile. What changed your mind? Thank you
@CarieHarling
@CarieHarling 2 жыл бұрын
Such a great question! I wanted something I could stay in for a while and not have to refill or change anything out (hence the two Moleskines), and I wanted something small because, if I was going to stay in it for a while, I needed it to travel well as I’d be traveling when my semester ended. All of that put together landed me at the idea for this little experiment that I honestly didn’t think would really work!

Can you explain the shared grocery list!! 🤯🤯
@CarieHarling
@CarieHarling 2 жыл бұрын
That shared grocery list changed my life, seriously. So much less stress. Fewer trips to the store. Okay… firstly, we all have Apple products, so I don’t know how or if this would work on other phones. I created a list called “Grocery” in the Reminders app. In that list, in the top right corner, there’s a circle with dots in it. If you tap that, one of the options is “Share List.” It then gives you loads of options for how to send an invite to everyone with whom you’d like to share that list. Once they accept that invite, they can view and edit that list too. It’s such a simple thing, but I am thankful for it every day!

@@CarieHarling hi Carrie. Great video. We use that exact same method for grocery shopping. I am in charge of meal planning, but for the ones who use the last of the more common ingredients are responsible for putting that down into our reminders app. I also use that app and name a list called errands and add specific errands so whomever is headed past the post office can ship packages and the one running the opposite direction can grab pharmacy or other related things. It’s such a time saver! I’m analog all the way and love my planners to death, but It did cut my grocery shopping and errand running in half. Highly recommend iPhone for the family.
