I’m totally like you, in that I want all the resources, all the curriculum etc. I especially love to print and organize and laminate all the materials and unit studies.. I geek out over it all lol

You HAVE to have the teachers manual for Math With Confidence. It has all the lessons and games. You can’t do it without.

Hi! If we plan to use math with confidence as a curriculum, I will definitely get the teachers manual but I’m really just interested to see if he can do first grade math concepts in the workbook. From what I see in the workbook the problems don’t seem to require an additional manual, but maybe I’m way off. I’m pretty committed to sticking with our right start curriculum for him. Did you like right start math better than simply Charlotte mason arithmetic? Or are you still using ?

We use both right now. I planned to solely use CM but it was getting really redundant and I realized Right Start would be a better fit bc it’s so game based. Next year I will not be buying CM level 2. I appreciate its simplicity and my daughter has done very well with it (addition within 30 so far, skip counting, bundles and units) but Right Start seems much better with place value and understanding large quantities.

I think you miss out on a lot if you don't get the MWC Teacher's Guide, but it sounds like you're planning to use the workbook as a supplement? ETA: just saw your other comment, so nevermind 😅 Also, I love that montessori letter work book! Thanks for sharing 😊

Yeah exactly! I think I’ll just use it as a fun supplement. Math with confidence looks like a great program but I already have everything for right start so I think I will start there. I wish Right start had an awesome workbook, but in someways, I respect the program for being more hands-on.

What is unschooling ?

Hey there, unschooling is a philosophy of education in which the child navigates their own education through their passions and interests. And then, as the parent, you are the facilitator of those interests by bringing in the resources that the child would need to learn more. So, for example, you wouldn’t do formal homeschooling with each subject. You would follow your child’s interest, and if they had an interest in art for example you would get them the resources that they needed to learn more about art. The theory is that a child will learn all of the basics, like reading, writing, and arithmetic through their interests, and at their own pace. There is a lot about this philosophy that I really love. I do believe that a child learns more about something when they have a genuine interest in it. And I do believe that children should be given much more free time to explore those interests. However, I also feel that it’s our responsibility as their parents and educators to give them a huge feast of knowledge and different resources, and then they can take from that what inspires them. It’s also pretty impossible to define a Unschooling here so if you’re interested, I encourage you to research it more. There is a slew of really great books about Unschooling. A big reason I am choosing not to unschool my son at this age is because he is fairly advanced in certain areas and I think that he wants to be challenged.

As one who grew up in Democratic Education, Unschooling is such a useful aproach! Especially for neurodivergent kids.
