I really wish youtube didn't incentivize longer video formats because these short, sweet, and to-the-point videos are my favorite.

Just went on a hike in the Tasmanian high country. I always go gourmet for the first night. This trip's first evening meal was pre cooked frozen pork sausages with packet carbonara pasta, fresh broccoli, carrot and a boiled egg. Other nights were mostly dehydrated although I always like to take an avocado with me (and always, always, always. . . Peanut butter!)

Great video! I learned some yrs ago, to carry a small secure container with olive oil along, as well. Just have with lunch/dinner. Like your "bring a lime" recommendation.

Cool video...I've only been camping a few times but I'm craving to just get out in nature and go camping solo for a few days. This is really useful...I was gonna ask about water, do you take it with you or use a kit or something?
@BackpackingTV4 жыл бұрын
Depends on where I'm going. Some places you will have to pack water in with you, other places you will be able to treat/filter water from nearby streams, rivers or lakes. It's something you'll need to research before you head out. Hope you enjoy your first few times camping solo, it's a liberating experience!

Good recommendations! I’ve seen your videos on food reviews, but it would be cool if you did a couple on drink mixes for the trail. Maybe one for hot drinks and one for cold/electrolyte drinks?

If I am hiking with others, would it be beneficial to know what the other members have packed? Sharing lists the night before for example?

I've read that your pack weight should not exceed 20% of your body weight, is this right? If so how would one carry enough food and gear for 7-Day hike? I thought about MREs but they will put me at about 40 pounds of food. Add that to my pack and I'd be carrying about 60 lb with me which is double 20% of my body weight. I'm guessing MREs would be a bad idea for a trip where you are steadily hiking and only camping overnight. I've also decided to switch from a Deuter act Lite 75 + 10 to a 65 + 10 which is also knocking off another 2 pounds. The mountain meal dehydrated meals are only about 2.6 ounces per package, so that helps substantially being that all my foods packed weight is going to weigh under 4 lb.

It's tough to keep your pack weight to 20% when you are doing 4+ days. As you see, food weight is significant. But 40 pounds of food is waaaay too much. Are you talking about the military style MREs? Or the dehydrated food options from places like REI? Dehydrated food is going to be lightest. I like to do dehydrated soups, such as "Darn Good Chile" from the grocery store. Weighs about 6 ozs and is a hearty meal once hydrated. You'll also need alot more calories than Ramen noodles alone can provide.
@jamieofalltrades5366 жыл бұрын
BackpackingTV yeah, I'm going.to bring dehydrated mountain meals for breakfast and dinner, and lunch is probably going to be Raman noodles, summer sausage, and a cliff bar for desert., I've managed to get my pack weight down to about 26 pounds for a 7-day trip. I switched to an ultralight tent and an ultralight sleeping bag which knocked off about 7 lor 8lbs
