We spent two months last year doing Peru - Ecuador - Colombia and it was just amazing. Highlights for us in Colombia included Cali for the salsa (Viajero hostel was amazing and ran salsa lessons every day and is just an all round cool hostel!), Salento (for the Cocora valley and coffee plantations - we even had a coffee bean roasting lesson and got to bring our coffee beans back home as a souvenir, so cool!), Medellin was just an all round cool city with so much history (Los Patios hostel - highly recommend. Bit pricier, but worth it in my opinion) and if you're going to Bogota I highly recommend doing one of the history free walking tours - we got such an incredible insight into the history of Colombia and all the things that they have unfortunately gone through and it was really eye opening. In Ecuador, you absolutely have to go to Secret Garden in Cotopaxi - we hesitated about this initially about whether to do it or not and absolutely LOVED it in the end and was one of the main highlights of the trip. Such an awesome few days and the accommodation is just incredible, the people are super friendly and the activities and food are top notch! Climbing cotopaxi can be a bit tough (our weather conditions were awful!), especially with the altitude, but so worth it!! Definitely definitely definitely go there. Also Cuenca was really cool and we spent a few nights at El Cafecito hostel, where we met one of the coolest hostel owners yet and had such cool discussions and late night dinners with - really nice place. In Quito, check out Community Hostel - probably our fav hostel of the trip overall (and we def visited some good ones!) - just such a nice atmosphere, breakfasts incredible, really good social vibes and activities going on! Can't wait to follow your trip through SA, it will bring back so many good memories for me! Enjoy - you will absolutely love it!!

I really recommend the trek to Lost City in Colombia! I did the trek about 2 years ago while I was sailing around the world and this trek was one of the biggest highlights of that whole trip. It is challenging, but sooooo worth it!! Beautiful scenery, and I would say the trek to get there is almost as beautiful as the Lost City itself!

Just an update on the Ecuador advisory! I was there throughout everything happening the last couple weeks and everything is completely back to normal. Basically, the government stopped subsidizing diesel, which was going to drive the prices of everything up, so there was about a week of protesting (and, in some areas, straight up rioting) and on Sunday the government finally reached an accord with everyone and reinstated the subsidy. Literally the next morning, everything was back to normal. It's back to being one of the easiest and safest South American countries to travel!

The Colombian Pacific is a must-visit!! Bahía Solano, El Valle, Nuquí and the surrounding area are all a stunning mix of wild beaches and tropical jungle. There's a small backpacker scene but it's not overcrowded, loads of incredible local business and eco-tourism to be explored. Mama Orbe in El Valle and Casa Colibri in Arusí are wonderful places to stay!

hiii!!! so i went to ecuador last year for about a month travelling with my family, and though we were obviously not backpacking i have some really great tips i think for it!!! firstly, if you do want to go to the galapagos, i would say to try and go island hopping instead of booking a cruise that brings you around. that way you can really experience the true life and culture of the galapagos, and be more flexible, and also only go to the islands you want to go to. of course i would also say that a planned tour is great because i would imagine with that you have a ranger with you, and on the galapagos you can’t really go anywhere by yourself bc it’s so regulated, that a ranger can bring you many more places. ALSO! there are a lot of unexpected fees in the galapagos (maybe you know) but each island you go to usually has a fee in addition to whatever ticket you used to get there, and flights also are pretty expensive, especially if you want to do island hopping through that instead of by taxi boat. in the galapagos, absolutely go to the island of Isabela and Floreana, they are amazing and have incredible histories, floreana is particularly amazing and has one of the most intriguing stories ever. Then to talk more about Ecuador itself, the Amazon portion is really beautiful (though i don’t know if you’ll do the amazon in columbia) and quito and a city called cuenca were my two favorites!! there are also many beautiful places in the mountains going between those cities, such as baños, which is like an adventure capital, and the two big volcanoes/mountains of ecuador that have a lot to offer. if the situation in ecuador gets better in the next months, i would 100% say to go there it is absolutely my favorite country i’ve ever been too and is so beautiful! if you’ve actually read this and want some more tips, my mom wrote a blog post on her website about both the galapagos and ecuador (it’s not for backpackers but has a lot of information) so here it is: elisabettagirardi.org/ecuador

also i made a video/vlog of our trip on my youtube so you can watch that in the „trips“ playlist on my channel!

lastly, on my mom‘s post she has a list of the places we stayed, and there are a decent amount of hostels on there, and all of them were really incredible!!! the hostel Carpe DM in Quito was amazinggggg and the hostel from guayaquil and Baños as well. we would all really recommend the Siona Lodge of you want to go to the Amazon in Ecuador, the staff is amazing, it’s less costly then some other lodges in the amazon and the place is stunning!

Exciting! I was in south America nearly two years and totally life changing. Viajero Hostel in cali is a good hostel with a pool good vibes and free dance class everyday :) Medellin is hand down one of my fav places. I know lots of backpackers stay in el poblado but for me i do not believe it is the true colombia. Suburbs like laureles are great for digital nomads :) I love the hostel the wandering paisa. Its also close to the street calle 70 where there is amazing partying and underground salsa bars :) Cafe Ondas is another good hostel :) There is lots of near by cute towns near to medellin such as Jardin which i enjoyed alot. You will love the Lost city hike, it was really muddy when I was there and soooo many mosquitos but incredible views and culture. Also take the short day walk through tropical nature to parque tyrona and stay the night on the beach in one of the hammocks. Good on you trying to travel with hand luggage i know i would had struggled. With the shoes for sure bring a pair of sneakers. Mine were great for dancing in salsa and also going on walks or just casual day walking in the city. Maybe a pair of sandels for a night out might be a good option too :) Also just be carefull with you clothing choices, I felt like in most city and towns I didn't feel like I wanted to where anything too revealing just because you will already have men staring and saying things to you :) Also just remember to stay strong and assertive with the men there and learn some ways of saying leave me alone in spanish such as "deja me sola". Im excited for you gal!!! You will see spectacular things and be apart of the beautiful latin culture!!!

I would recommend NEMO, its a free app that's a bit better than duolingo in my opinion, especially for languages like Chinese and greek which don't use the Roman alphabet. Anyway love your videos and optimism. Have a great trip!

They aren't backpackers, but some van life channels I watched either just left Columbia or just arrived. They are the Mattneys and Trent and Allie. The Mattneys just left Ecuador during their current protests. So you may want to watch their videos first. Trent and Allie just made it there.

From my friends' experience, really good trainers (like you mentioned) are enough, because if you plan on hiking up mountains over two days or something, you will have to rent winter trousers, a jacket, gloves and real hicking boots anyway
@BackpackingBananas5 жыл бұрын
That's good to know that it's possible to rent equipment!

@@BackpackingBananas She did Cerro San Cristobal in Peru though, not exactly where you are going but I am sure that this also counts for other countries! Especially when the temperature on the summit is below zero

Hi Christie! Love your channel and all your videos. As someone who has never backpacked I'm sure you know more than I do and I'm sure you've probably checked this all out... But I work for the foreign office and we've just changed our travel advice over the weekend for Ecuador advising against all but essential travel there and against all travel for people crossing the border there and I immediately thought of you, thinking of your upcoming trip! Just wanting you to stay safe and whatever you choose I hope you have a wonderful time! EDIT: just continued to watch the video!! Haha and noticed you cover this. :)

Thanks Charlotte!! I saw this actually, really hoping that things get better in Ecuador 🙏🏼🙏🏼 will keep an eye on it 😊

Finger crossed for you 🤞 if you don't follow FCOTravel on twitter already, every time the travel advice changes it gets posted there so that could be the easiest way to keep up with it. (I swear I'm not their PR 😅) Safe travels! X
