Only one crawler, a gloriosum since October 2022. Bought it from a local grower as a rooted one leaf prop. It gives me at least one new leaf a month, even during the winter! And of course each new leaf is bigger than the last one.

The leaves of a plant will limit itself in relation to the roots it can develop, so if you want larger leaves on your Dean McDowell you need to place it in a deeper pot that can give the roots the space they need to grow, and eventually the increased energy the roots need will force the plant to grow larger leaves.

I absolutely agree that Dean McDowell grows very fast! Now that I have a couple of crawlers myself... and I haven't killed them... I AM starting to wonder if I'm going to be able to deal with their growth habit. btw, I really enjoy your content. Thank you!

I started what I thought was a simple plant chore too while watching this. I have a string of hearts I wanted to propagate. I got it as a small smarter pot less than a year ago and it’s now 2.5 meters long and with only a few strands I wanted to fill out the pot. I was also concerned why it was constantly thirsty. I’ve had it in pon and in a pot I thought was much too big so it would last forever. I now found such an insane amount of roots filling that big pot and am a little lost as to where to put it if I want to double the amount of strands in the pot. Untangling it is also a special kind of hell. To frustrating plant chores and good virtual company while doing them.

I love your McDowell 😍 Crawling philodendrons are usually stunning but they freak me out and really stress me plus they take so much space. All I keep from this type of Philo is a Gloriosum and I'm really thinking about giving it away and getting a glorious instead that can be grown as a climbing plant.

I absolutely love the crawlers leaves, Gloriosum, Mamei, Plowmanii, Pastazunum, McDowell. But yes their growth habit can actually pretty annoying! You can only keep them in a long pot for only a few months at a time, I chop them and have 2-3 in one pot but it wont last long.

I give McDowell five months to outgrow its new pot. By early September it'll be peaking out the pot. I personally adore the crawlers, they're among my favourite phils. Such a pity there aren't that many crawler species. I counted Gloriosum, Pastazanum, Plowmanii, Luxurians, Mamei, Lynamii (or Devansayeanum), Nangaritense, McDowell, sp Colombia, and Melloi (the last one I only recently found out about, described in 2017, has trilobate leaves, new leaves come out almost hot pink. It has its whole thing going on). If you know any other crawler species, do say!

I don't have any crawlers and I don't think I will get any because of the space issue. Thanks for showing me that if I would get these kind of pots I will not use the plastic divider with all the holes. I have a thing for pumice and I add ca 20% clay, my aroids love it and I just planted my Whalefin (Dracaena masoniana) in it :) My point is that pumice works very well if you want to have a reservoir even without the plastic divider because of the aeration properties.

I don't own any crawling philodendron yet, but I do love the look of them and the growth pattern. I feel like crawling philodendron generally have very pillowy leaves and I love that. I have over 200 plants in my 122 square feet bedroom so I absolutely don't have the space unless I get rid of my bed, but planning to get some crawlers once I get my own place.

So my plant chores for yesterday (when this video came out) was to repot 3 plants that I imported back in May (first import) and have been in moss ever since - Philodendron Dean McDowell, Gloriosum Zebra and Gloriosum. What are the odds? Anyway since you did the repotting I figured I better watch and instead put mine off for another day. Oh well! ; )

I just got my first few crawlers and it is a love hate thing!! I watered today in the massive greenhouse, planted some tomatoes, Peppers and basil. Moved some more plants from the greenhouse because it is getting really hot in there. I repot a massive Hoya every day but can only do one and then my back goes out and I have to sit. But my Hoya are in 18-20 inch pots and most are 3-4 foot tall on trellis’s!!!
