Gymnosperms Plant body - sporophyte Gametophyte is retained for variable amount of time on plant body(seed habit) (Precursor of seed habit is pteridophyte)and is dependent on sporophyte Fertilization takes place in plant body where in pollen grain from other source lands on female gametophyte Zygote(seed- embryo+ protective covering) is formed which later on germinates to give rise to new plant body Naked seeds because not covered with fruit hence called gymnosperms Whereas in angiosperms seed is covered with fruit even ovules and pollen grains are present in reproductive organs called flowers unlike gymnosperms where mega and microsporangium are closed in compact cones
