I.D. that plant, thanks again for spending the time for me, I agree that when I bought it, it was in the early spring and full of flowers, and now like you said only a few are showing, so I'll wait for next season, one last question, do I need to do anything through the winter, they get very cold in central Indiana, and it's too big to move?

I D that plant, THANK YOU very much for responding, I forgot to mention that the blooms are getting buds like where the flowers are going to develop, but then they turn black like they were burnt or something, I thought that I might have messed up with fertilizer but the vine is growing about 1 1/2 ft. taller than the trellis, it looks very healthy, will this change your analysis?, also I didn't mention that I live in central IN, thanks again and I will check my e-mails as soon as I get a chance.

Thank you for the most informative video I've found on honeysuckle! Is it normal for the leaves to die off in pairs closest to the stem/roots as new leaves come in? Mine aren't dying off all at once and the plant seems otherwise healthy (though some powdery mildew has been quite stubborn on those lower leaves...)
@IdentifyThatPlant4 жыл бұрын
Your plant growth (and dying leaves) sound normal to me. Sometimes, I've seen some plants get covered in mildew or aphids. That's not so pretty but the plant still seems to thrive.

How do you prune this when it gets woody. I have 3 new plants on trellises so this is not an issue yet. Thanks.

I've started a John Clayton honeysuckle from the local greenhouse. Recently I noticed that there were 2 separate vines in the pot that was purchased. One of the vines was already blossomed at the time and the leaves were thick, dark green. Over the past two weeks the petals have fallen off. The other vine has been growing super fast, about a foot per week and has more delicate, lighter green leaves. Can you explain why these two vines, from the same pot, and I'm assuming from the same root system, are acting so different? I've searched around a lot looking for stages of growth, root systems, and this video has been the best in explaining the growth of the honeysuckle. Yet, all the great info isn't really satisfying what I want to know. Thanks in advance, Kevin

I can think of a couple possible reasons for what you have observed: (1) These are two different plants. The second might not even be the John Clayton honeysuckle at all. (2) They are the same plant (with the same root system as you suggested) and the lighter green growth is newer growth. I have noticed -- in general with many kinds of plants -- that new growth tends to have lighter green leaves. As the Coral honeysuckle leaves mature, they become darker green and feel thicker and more stiff. You may well have a single plant with two vine lengths of differing age.

Hello ID that Plant, I have taken the liberty of linking this You Tube video on the Facebook page "Charleston Flora" I hope you are okay with that. If not, leave me a message there and I will adjust or remove it. Thanks, Jon Moss

the flowers are edible, very tasty, sweet, while the fruit is poisonous!
