Plant portrait - Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis)

I have a couple growing at the side of my bungalow. Did not know what they were untill tonight when I asked a gardening site for help to identify. A lady said evening primrose so I looked it up and then found you. I'm in South Yorkshire England. They are well over 5 feet tall and are doing a good job of holding my verbena up that is over 6 feet tall. They are growing in a strip of soil that is only around 9 to 12 inches wide. Very well done and informative video. One of these plants grew as a weed by my driveway. I thought it looked nice, so I watered it weekly during the hot dry summer of central California. My reward (and surprise) were the beautiful blooms starting at dusk. I discovered the blooms by accident when I went to check the mail after dark. Additionally, it was visited by many moths including a very large species. I took some pictures and a short video of the moths and sent it to friends. They were delighted as most had never seen this type of plant. Thank you for educating me on the lifecycle of this plant as I would like to continue to grow them.

I had a couple of these wild evening primrose years ago, the birds gifted me I guess, anyway they grew to about 4 feet tall. At dusk when the blooms opened, each petal opened rapidly in sequence which gave the illusion of the flower twirling Each bloom was similar in size to a small Holly Hock. I had sandy soil, but I did water regularly. This year one is growing at the edge of my neighbours driveway and my fence. Yeah seeds on the way!!!!!!!!!! Blessings to all

I have a Eve. Primrose that began blooming this late afternoon, 7/6/19. We used to have more so I will collect seeds and strategically spread this around. It also smells nice. Sort of lemony.

its pretty I've had it since 2003 its spreads like wildfire its beautiful for a month then its just dark green leaves and gets ugly its a hardy plant i have it onthe east side of house

Thank you for a very good video‼️😁… I was looking for directions on pruning it for fall and winter but looks like that shouldn’t happen… as I like clean looking flowerbeds, I got carried away about two or three Yrs ago… one day oldest son was here and asked about it after seeing it … looks like clueless me didn’t even know it had come back.. 🤪 to be sure, do I do any pruning whatsoever… it is an eyesore when it is not in its glory… thank you … please reply… I have other plants also coming along.. On the positive side they are a joy to watch open up and also see the stems MOVING….WOW‼️‼️God created some magnificent things👏🏻👏🏻😁😁have a great day👋🏻 Also do they need to be fertilized ❓

you don't have to dead head them after 2 nights, the flowers drop off naturally, ....enjoy your evening display, they are stunning

I think it's just to prevent it from propagating too much or overtaking other plants if not wanted.

Lauren Rhoads these come along kind of slowly. They came up in my yard, the rosettes are usually for a year before they send up a stalk. They are not highly invasive, but take a fair amount of vertical space. After about ten years they have finally gotten to the point where I feel some thinning will be necessary. They tolerate full sun and dry conditions. They are very pretty, with the flowers working their way up the stem.

Lauren Rhoads yes, exactly what Carole said. I had planted these in a seed mix last year but they didn’t do much of anything but grow low to the ground, no flowers... but this year they are massive plants sending out tall bloom stalks. I can’t believe it! Happy growing. 😍👍💚
