Im going to grow the pokeweed as a crop. I have pulled this plant for years- as a weed. Im so sorry inside. You are such a great teacher. Thank you so much. I always loved the purple berries to look at when traveling on the side of the road. Im going to love making friends with this plant again.

It's a beautiful native but don't feel bad. If you have to pull it---you have to pull it. It's a good survivor so it wont be the last one!. They transplant well in the very early spring, before the shoots, but it's best to wear disposable gloves since the root is quite toxic.

You are correct that most parts of this plant are poisonous -- although some people do know how to properly use the leaves as a foraged food and other skilled herbalists know how to appropriately utilize the berries for medicine. I do not currently have any plans to do a plant portrait for water hemlock. I may someday feature the Eastern hemlock tree (Tsuga canadensis) which is not poisonous.

People do make a type of jelly using the berries,but its the seeds inside that are poison.

I came here after watching a video by The Black Forager. The plant looked familiar, and here we are. I have a pokeweed with a taproot that runs BENEATH my house. I'm ok with the backyard appearances, but the front yard emergence is in the way of my roses.

One plant used to grow from underneath a spruce in the house I used to live. I often try to get rid of it as a child since I knew it was poisonous. My mom did not understand its danger, she thought I was just being a kid.

I want to plant hydrangeas in my yard where they are, but I can’t get their roots out! Could I count on the hydrangea to suppress poke weed or might the poke weed beat the hydrangea up?

I do not think the hydrangea will suppress the pokeweed. And, yes, pokeweed has some long roots. You have to dig deeply and persistently to get all of the root. Maybe wait a year after that to be sure you've been successful before planting anything else in that same location.

The whole plant is poisonous. Maybe not rhodadendron level poisonous but still poisonous, just the same. Eating the berries is considered bad. Well, maybe medicinally in moderation but I wouldn't. Even then, don't harm/break/chew the seeds since they are very toxic. Some people only eat the early spring shoots by blanching one or more times followed by a full cooking---I've never tried though. Most people just eat the prepared poke greens (poke salat); the young, fully green leaves provided throughout the growing season. But that only after proper preparation! All the USDA says is "Young leaves and stems when properly cooked are edible and provide a good source of protein, fat and carbohydrate.", and some nutritional data but no guidance beyond that. Yes but No if cooked properly. Berries and roots are always poisonous. This is a popular cooked green down south and very tasty. You must cook them and rinse of the water three times then they are safe to sat. I know some pple that only rinse them once. They are then cooked just like any fav dish.

The berries are very medicinal and are very effective for both internal cancer and skin cancer. The seeds are quite toxic. I know because I had extensive cancer that was healed by poke berries and poke root extract. Rondogardener Hello! U r spot on, on ur knowledge, too many people give this wonderful plant a bad name. I’m not dead, due to an eastern mountain folk lure, dried berries r medicinal. I did not have any medical problems to my knowledge (don’t go to doctors) but I dried up a lot of berries, the dosage was to swallow (NOT CHEW) 3 dried berries daily for a month, then one a month for up to a year, I got board and stopped on last day of the month. I read an article of a young women diagnosed with terminal cancer, she went to family farm to live what she had left of life, befriended foragers who new of her condition, digging up carrots, she noticed a Polk root and wondered how it’d taste juiced with carrots, her foraging friends sat with her because she became deathly ill and they thought it was her time. I had read that article (written by her) I think around 20 years after the fact, she’s alive and happy living n Australia! Ur testimony is the second one I have crossed, but have heard others to mention the cancer fighting abilities of this wonderful plant. I love Polk leaves and scrambled eggs, delicious ! Thank u

I have swallowed (NOT CHEW) 3 dried berries a day for a month, after that, I’d occasionally pop a fresh purple berry in my mouth and swallow them. I have only ran across one mention of someone dying due to Polk berries, a mother juiced the berries, seeds were broken, which her child consumed and died, apparently broken or chewing the seeds inside the berries appear to be what’s harmful. All I know is that I have consumed several by swallowing, not eat, and I’m still alive at 58. BUT...as with any and all things n life, swim, dive, drive, run, fly AT YOUR OWN RISK, everything we do n life is a risk...isn’t it. Have a wonderful day

The only thing I've ever done is dig the plant up. If the plant has been established for a while, this can be a chore as the root is large and deep. If the root is totally removed, it will no longer grow in that spot.

wash them 3 times each time in clean water - leaves and water - when cooking them - boil them 3 times each time change the water.boil them again . after the 3 th time add you salt and pepper or what ever for flaver.

GROW> You cant plant it nor transplant it. Ok only way i can get it to grow, place where you want it! FENCE ect FEED THE WILD BIRDS, SEEDS! as they carry poke seeds and other seeds, in there system! They poop the poke seeds out, and they start growing! as well as berries, and other useful plants. it may take a yr. or 2 depend on the poke is in your area> Just get it GOING have poke for EVER CHEERS> REMEMBER THIS

Not exactly true. Prepared properly Poke leaves and stem are eaten all the time in mid and southern USA.
