Thank you for doing this tour! I greatly enjoyed it. CBG is what made me change my major in college from political science/Arabic to horticulture and the work of Richard Hawke and his colleague Jim Ault are who got me into plant breeding and trial evaluations. Chicago Botanic was my first real job in horticulture and changed my life. I'm deeply grateful for my time there. Thank you for sharing this wonderful institution with your audience.

Nice one Mr. Putnam👍. I often look up and save copies of Hawke's/CBGs trials when I'm trying to pick a cultivar of a plant for a garden. What's the best of... the most tolerant of...the most floriferous....least disease affected...and so on. Their observations are often so helpful when building a garden. Thanks for this interview. Next...? Nybg...Mbot... maybe?

Thank you for sharing this, Jim. I think there are a lot of people unaware of the hard work they put in here/ I am particularly impressed with the betony they introduced called PInk Cotton Candy. It is such a great plant! Love their reports too, but note, in 4 or 5 years - many of the plants that are tested may no longer be readily available .... This is particularly the case for the monarda and the heuchera...

I just moved from the Chicago area to zone 8B. I used to visit the Chicago Botanical Gardens often. There is always something there for everyone to learn and enjoy. I recently watched your Q&A wherein you answered the question about why you do not have any Crape Myrtles on your property. I had to chuckle when he mentioned that they are experimenting with a new Crape Myrtle that should survive and thrive in zone 5b. You just can't escape those Crape Myrtles. 😁

@@HandcraftedintheFoothills I never did either. However, I would get my hands on as much shredded leaves as I could and I used that together with shredded cedar mulch. I really think the leaves made a difference. If you recall, the speaker from the Botanical Gardens mentioned that they also use leaves. You were fortunate to have had good black dirt. Makes such a difference.

Honestly this video has me in tears…my family is in the process of relocating from the Chicago suburbs to Dallas, TX and what am I going to miss the most? Even recommended by Joey Santoro! When I was an agriculture major during my high school years in N. Illinois, I was farm focused. Fields of animal feed fertilized with a manure spreader didn't lead to ornamentals & I shifted to medicine. It wasn't until I graduated & moved to N. Georgia that I rekindled my love of growing things so I never toured the CBG. Thanks for showing me what I missed, I was busy stacking hay bales! Just a beautiful place & very important for gardeners & the industry.

My first trip to CBG was in 1983 on a mission from the then NC State Arboretum and for my own Master's research. I was immediately shocked by their vast acreage, expensive and expansive greenhouse complex, quality of staff, ambition to be the best, and budget. My old, tattered backpack was raining soil fragments all over the plane, the taxi, rental car, and everywhere I went. With some relief, I dropped it on the propagation bench in front of the staff and unloaded about 30 little and rare plants that Dr. JC Raulston has carefully chosen for their new garden. They were thrilled, especially with the rare Veronica gentianoides 'Variegata' that almost nobody had at the time.

I have been to a TON of botanic gardens, arboretums, etc, through north america and europe, and this place is exceptional. The variety, size, and programming is just staggering. I can not fathom the work that goes into this place. I know they have a lot of volunteers, but wow. So much work.

Richard Hawke is surprised that so many of us read the reports developed at the Chicago Botanic Garden? It is simple as this - if a plant can survive a Chicago winter (anda Chicago hot humid summer), it can thrive in many if not most places in the US.

I've seen well rated plants from these trials that are just not available commercially. I understand that large nurseries may not be able to justify producing some of these because of production difficulties, but these sorts of plants would be great for smaller independent nurseries that are better able to specialize in less main stream plants. Does the Chicago Botanic Garden ever make plant material available to nurseries so they can start growing and propagating otherwise unavailable plants?

Hi Ram, how are you doing? I thought of you last week......my husband and I took a day trip to Blowing Rock, NC. It's in the mountains, two hours from my house. Have you been? It was ablaze with annual and perennial color. Also, the hydrangeas were in full bloom. Plus, like you, they use lots of green textures in their gardening. It was stunning. Given the mountain temps, their landscapes do not struggle with heat like ours do. Just wanted to check in and say hello. ~ Susan
