A plant thief?!? This is a first for us here at Grass Roots, y'all. We recently discovered someone stealing from our Jungle Greenhouse. A customer, over the course of two days, has been swiping top cuttings from rare plants and sneakily putting them in her pockets and her purse.
Please subscribe to Grass Roots Gardening for more content on all things gardening: / @grassrootsgardening
At first glance, this might seem similar to "proplifting" - the act of taking plant cuttings found on the floor in a greenhouse or nursery, with the goal of propagating the cuttings. However, these rare plant cuttings weren't on the ground - they were deliberately (and aggressively) torn from expensive plants, and the thief's selfish actions caused hundreds of dollars of damage to numerous rare plants in the greenhouse.
We were able to identify the customer, and we even spoke to her on the phone. It was a frustrating experience, to say the least. Please check out this video, comprised of security footage from our store, and you'll know why.
Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

First of all, as a gardener, I really feel sorry for how terrible such an experience makes you feel. Publicity makes perfect sense in this case. This lady is a pro thief, you can tell by how confident she feels during a stealing "session". In my open garden there is theft happening almost every blooming season. Last year it was Lilac trees, for example. People just kept breaking off lilac branches. It made me pretty mad, so I've cut off the rest of the blooming branches and personally gave it for free to every neighbor I've met. Hang in there! We have to deal with all kinds of evil until it is present in the world. Be the light in the darkness!

I had an in-law who made a sport of this. She thought it was fine to steal cuttings. I pointed out her actions were vandalism and theft because she was taking someone else's product w/o permission. It only made her more aggressive about it. Beats all I ever seen. These are the same people that think if they finish the banana and coke before they get to the register, they don't have to pay for it.

Sickening. One of the wonderful cactus nurseries in my town was getting robbed at night. The man would come in during business hours, then back later knowing exactly the expensive plants and sculptures he wanted. Really sad. Hi Ryan! I said I'd check out this channel and here I am. Wow, stealing plants, and offering to pay for the damages, but still won't admit to doing it. That's pretty sad. You're right....people will steal anything. This isn't anything new. I worked for Walgreens Drug Stores for almost 20 years, from 1973 to 1990. We'd find empty packages all over the store. It surprised me then what they took, but these days, nothing surprises me. I'm so glad that you were reimbursed by this lady, and hopefully she won't come back again.

You, sir, picked the wrong commenter to accuse of theft of this country! MY ancestors didn't even arrive in this country until the mid-1940's. They came in LEGALLY from Germany and Sweden. They were poor people. Slavery was abolished by then, but they couldn't have afforded it anyway. You are way off base here. We were talking about RETAIL THEFT. Retail theft is a huge problem, it hurts the store owners, and all of us when the prices have to go up to cover those costs. Be careful what you post on someone's comments.

Right? Even at Home Depot, I’ve found pieces of random stuff. I have asked employees if I could keep them and showed them what I’ve found. They all have said it’s fine since they just throw them away. I’ve even had them tell me they’re gonna be throwing out plants on such and such day but I can’t legally go into someone’s trash can either in CA. When I was younger mom had the most beautiful geraniums off some hanging planters on the porch ceiling. When we woke up one morning they were all gone! Even the hooks were damaged. Broke mamas heart 😢 now she has orchids and understand why the nursery owner and employees walk around making sure you’re not stealing.

Yup! People do steal anything even plants. I had worked in an outdoor garden department and I’d seen several empty containers that plants were actually had disappeared. We sold flats of flowers as well and people would actually pulled few of the flowers out and replaced it with other kinds. They would just leave the ones that were pulled out and set it to the sides.

This recently happened to my neighbor after a trip to the nursery. They had all their plants lined up ready to plant. The next morning everything was gone. My mother also had a beautiful rubber tree plant that she had nursed for years stolen off her patio. Now what the price of everything going up, plants included, this will probably be more of a common occurrence.

So sorry this happened to you. You’ll need to train your employees to be more proactive by having them interact w/customers who are hovering over the expensive plants. Or, if possible, put the rare & expensive plants in one area where cameras are clearly visible. Many people think cuttings aren’t stealing, but if you put a camera in plain sight (maybe w/signs) it will deter them from stealing to begin with. Just some thoughts to keep thieves from ruining your beautiful plants.

Unfortunately theft has become common and this lady was probably encouraged to do this by videos that suggest you take plant “droppings” at local garden centers etc. I had to relocate my favorite plants to behind the house as people would cut flowers and my daughter had to stop planting behind her garage as people would come down the alley and steal everything from young lilac plants to big hostas and daylilies. A friend had hers dug up and found holes in her front flowerbeds!

The phone conversation went really well I thought. I thought it was going to be much worse. She said multiple times she put it in her pocket. And said 'yes' when you kept saying I saw you steal on camera. She even apologized and said she'd pay for it. She probably just didn't want to say the words, 'yes I stole it' as a lot of people wouldn't do, as she probably thought she'd get into even more trouble. But she does admit that she took them. I can understand that you're angry though, and that she shouldn't have taken those leaves. I just thought she wouldn't be that reasonable by the way you were describing it. Like I was expecting some angry irate woman getting all defensive, swearing and hanging up on you or something. I think the phone call was a best case scenario tbh.

There were many more things called him out on it. He looked straight at me and told me he moved it and put it in some weeds. Well my Uncle and I looked for the 100 pound old plow. How hard would it be to save up for one year, to buy one plant? After you take care of the plant, it multiples and then you have so many, you don’t know what to do with them all. I got one aloe plant last year, It had 3 pups. I had to split them up in another pot, so they can have room to grow. I’m going to feel guilty when I have to get rid of anymore because, I just don’t have the space, to keep expanding. Thank you 🤗🌱

I had a woman come in my plant shop and steal as well. She was also a regular. Come to find out she was stealing all the time. Buy 2 plants and steal 10. I made her empty her bag, called the police and pressed charges. I work too darn hard to tolerate these plant thieves who think they "only took a small piece of a plant". They disgust me. The sad part is they think it's okay to do this.

If she wouldn’t admit stealing from you, she continued to flat out lie to you , You should have prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Have your attorney charge her for court coast as well as your losses.. The next time she’s caught they’ll be no record ,case history helps determine the Outcome of the Judge’s decision.. Some people never learn.

As a society and as business owners, we must not tolerate theft. There must be repercussions or the thefts and other abuses become all the greater. If we don't act and demand accountability, arrests or whatever is appropriate, then we are part of the problem and I don't think have much room to complain.
