Ana your garden veg is looking great! i think it's awesome that seeds you save in garden have memory so after a few seasons they learn your own garden conditions and do well. looking forward to seeing your indoor garden.

I live in rural Lincolnshire and not a single one of my 8 ft by 4 ft bed of dwarf French beans survived. I was blaming slugs, but eventually realised it was pigeons eating them as they poked their heads up!. Then they started on the leek bed, just crushing them and pulling out the grass-like seedlings, presumably for nest building - so we had to net the leeks. Pigeon pie might be on the menu when SHTF!.
@AnasFoodLifestyleАй бұрын
I hear pigeon pie is rather lovely do fatten them up now 🙁
@emmaearnshaw3282Ай бұрын
I was going to say, you have to be out first light with an Air rifle, then it makes sense. But, If you're not gardening full time then that's probably not an option. My dad used to grow the beans inside an arch of fencing wire, if he saw pigeons in the garden, he'd get the dog to watch them (a Westy), get him all wound up, and if they went in the arch for the beans he'd let him out and he'd often get one.
@susanw9630Ай бұрын
@@emmaearnshaw3282 Thanks for the tips, Emma - we've tried the air rifle option but definitely need some target practice! Your dad's technique sounds fun! x

Thanks Ana. I have found growing this season quite challenging. Some crops have done well, others not so well. I try to have storable food crops, given what is coming to us. Can I just recommend jerusalem artichokes. They grow anywhere, in almost any conditions. I planted mine in the spring, and gave them absolutely no attention, come rain or shine. They produce a huge crop, and can be left in the ground all winter until reqired. You will inevitably miss a few when harvesting, and these will multiply to give another crop next year - so almost perpetual. Probably not my very first choice of crops, but reliable and versatile - especially when you are hungry!
@AnasFoodLifestyleАй бұрын
Thank you 😊 I used to grow globe ones in old house, they were lovely never tried Jerusalem, I think I must . Thank you 😁
@lf4061Ай бұрын
My Jerusalem Artichokes are in flower right now when everything else is dying back. The yellow flowers are bright and cheery like sunflowers. The Jerusalem Artichoke plants are very tall, eight feet, and straggly looking through most of the summer; so I would recommend planting at the back of a border or in a corner of the yard. I have found that if you pinch the top of main stem and leaves when the plants are a couple feet tall, the plant will branch out and not get quite so tall but still flower.
@susanw9630Ай бұрын
@@AnasFoodLifestyle They are quite tasty, especially in a soup, but do contain indigestible sugars which give you terrible wind - be warned!

No preppers are quitters, well done for getting back out there, growing our own food is a learning curve, I’ve had disappointing results this year too, but I’ve also had successes, at the moment we can see that nature is doing it’s best to show us things are still possible, things that naturally die back and return every year are a good example, also gifts dropped by birds, they get no special care and yet still thrive, and of course we can still grab a few bits with our weekly shop to squirrel away, while stock is affordable and available.

I have cattle weld mesh that I use as a vertical planter as it's a great way to maximise space as I hook the planters like the one your carrots are in with as I place them 6ft high to stop carrot fly and the plants like Parsley and Basil underneath as they do better in shade.

I've used plastic bread clips to slip over the stems of beans, peas, herbs... I select for seed saving. This way I don't accidently harvest them for other purposes .

You've still got a good bit left to harvest so it's happy days and none will go to waste and the rest Will make good compost,I think it's been the same all over the UK,my grapes are poor this year and my rhubarb wasn't as thick stemmed as it usually is,I've got leeks in now,but it's all trial and error as you know and when you find out what does well you will just end up growing that,that's what I do,at least your girls can get in there once you start getting stuck in removing the waste,I found that potatoes in containers is the way forward,I've had plenty of carrots and raspberries and onions that were grown from sets, going to try and grow them from seed next year, going to get some munure to throw on the raised beds over winter as well as some worm casts, your chilis look amazing so you've obviously done something right 👍.
