I'm coming from the realm of aquaponics and I would have to say that this is the first thing taught in the hobby. This is super important with aquaponics because we aim to never do water changes and grow as many plants as possible all the while keeping our fish healthy even in super high stocking densities and grow out feeding schedules. The nitrogen cycle is very well explained in some of the aquaponics videos out there. Dustin does pretty good here but some other vids have better tools for getting the info organized and presented, such as animated clips and charts. Love what your doing here D. Tank on baby!

You did a great job Dustin. That big plant you pull a leaf from has to have a big root system. When I had the 29g up I was able to see the roots from under the tank and they were all over the substrate.

Just a note, I believe that more important than the water was the previously used filter. You see, "cycled" refers to a tank with enough good bacteria to hold fish and said bacteria Is not in the water but in surfaces such as filter ceramic noodles, sponges, etc.

Thanks Dustin for the great info! Iv'e watch a tone of videos on the net about the nitrogen cycle and your simple white board helps a lot. I'm a dude who needs visuals man! I'm also a newbie who killed all his fish the first time around with new tank syndrome so I've dove head first into the dirted planted aquarium. Accept this time i'm taking it slow. Been cycling the take and adding plants for weeks now, just added all the plants I got from you a few days ago so it'll probably be another month before I begin to add fish. The one question I have is how do you know when you have a good amount of beneficial bacteria? Thanks again! You rock bro! Don't stop doin' what you're doin'!

thanks. is eco complete good substrate for plants?
@AssassinGreen7 жыл бұрын
I actually think that the most important thing in order to have your good bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle is your filter. Without the filter you cannot rely on the substrate to house the good bacteria. Your fully cycled filter can go anywhere with your fish and they will be fine. Having said that, I do like Dustin and his videos.

That's why planted tanks should read 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and a very minimal Nitrate reading to be considered healthy for your fish. I cycle with snails and seed everyday from already established tanks or swap out an already used and bacteria established filter.
@josephs42127 жыл бұрын
Certain rocks, media (like matrix), driftwood, DSB, can support dentrification bacteria that convert NO3 to N2 and O2, in the absence of water changes and plants.

@dominic.h.33637 жыл бұрын
Shrimp have so little waste, they can't keep the growing beneficial bacteria alive and these bacteria starve. Once all the beneficial bacteria are dead, the shrimp waste will just collect in the tank and the shrimp will die of ammonia poisoning. Watch flip aquatics videos to learn all about how to keep shrimp.

@kevinhayes31467 жыл бұрын
Josh Booth use floating plants or a pothos house plant with only the root submerged in the tank or hang on back filter.
@MrsStevenBrown6 жыл бұрын
Add more biological media, maybe an extra aquaclear filter with just bio-ceramic media, mini bio-balls, etc...any mega surface media to grow the good bacteria on, don’t change it, rinse it in the water change water once in awhile to get the big junk out, but let it grow and stay well oxygenated. This will take the place of the live plants in a breeding tank/rough fish tank.

how do i get drift wood to stop leeching tanins and still float?
@ChristopherYoung10185 жыл бұрын
I understood what you were saying but let’s just say a person don’t have plans that feed from the roots An stead you have plants such as Anubis’s and java ferns and floating plants that get there Nutrients from the water column with a Sand substrate do the same rules apply
@Dustinsfishtanks5 жыл бұрын
Yes- heavy plant loads are always the key- floating plants would be even better as they absorb co2 from the air
@AquaticHaus7 жыл бұрын
I heard that dirted tank takes longer to complete the cycle compared with aqua soil How long do you think a tank needs to complete the nitrogen cycle of a dirted tank of 2x1x1 ft tank size
@cozygamingandvideos39147 жыл бұрын
Greg Moran is correct if he's talking about land plants. With aquatic plants it varies by plant, but typically It's reversed. However, many of the plants you love ie crypts and swords are heavy root feeders.

how in the world do tanks with plastic plants make it?

@joselynsusanne993311 ай бұрын
I know this is very old --- But can anyone tell me if Sand is an okay substrate for plants? It's a mix of that and some Imagitarum "substrate" which is close to sand but not fully. I am always struggling with my plants and no idea why. That's the last idea I have.
