CARDBOARD COMMENT: I live in a somewhat dry environment, zone 2b, in central Alberta, Canada (yes, one of the provinces that was burning most last summer, creating all that smoke that made it out to you). Cardboard that I laid down 5 years ago is still in the garden under the wood mulch in many places. Happy gardening!

Creeping thyme is my favorite ground cover that is easy to grow. Corsican mint is also amazing, but not as hardy and more of a tender leaf. The scent cannot be beat though. It’s incredible. I also got seeds from Select Seeds and grew those. Pennyroyal is another one that smells heavenly. And supposedly it repels certain insects. Love your choice of oregano. Really any herb that can stand up to a little foot traffic would be ideal. I have been using cardboard since I first heard about it from Jay at Jay’s Garden Journal. It’s almost a miracle how it immediately changes the soil for the better. I wondered why worms seemed to swarm the area, other than the moisture and cover, and learned that they actually eat the glue used in cardboard. My husband gets huge boxes from work, and we use them to create new beds or prepare garden areas in fall for easy planting in spring. It’s still some work hauling the mulch to thickly cover the cardboard, but it’s far easier and better for the soil to simply cover it. The lack of weeding sold me!

I love that color and the many uses of that Plant Danielle💚 This year, before I planted my sweet pea starts, I laid down cardboard in the area then covered it with mulch. Usually the weeds grow up with the Sweet Peas and when I pull them out there are tons of weeds.. it worked wonderfully 😁 It’s very dry here in So Cal but we did get more rain this year and I water them when needed. Now it’s time to plant Zinnias in their place💗💛🧡I also planted a Pink Flamingo Celosia seedling there💖 I grew one last year after hearing our speak of it and I just loved it!! So fun. Hugs to you and Grace🤗🌸

I added Drops Of Jupiter oregano to my garden this year, it’s such a beautiful plant AND it has a super cool name! I love that song even though it was played way too much on the radio back in the day😆 I really love how PW has been naming plants after some of my favorite songs😀 I like to buy plants that have interesting and memorable names such as Pyromania and Stairway to Heaven. I just picked up Back In Black sedum, though I’m not really a fan of AC/DC, I think it’s an awesome plant 😁

Greetings from Ireland, Beautiful garden, Its the bees knees. We plan to put in two big no dig beds and a wildlife pond in the back garden next autumn. We make our own compost and we will split and divide perennials from the front garden and plant them into our compost. We grow annuals from seed and they will be planted in next year when the last frosts have passed.

I have a chartreuse non-flowering ornamental oregano I use as a ground cover, it’s so cute! It was just labeled “golden oregano” and has softer foliage than regular oregano. I just cut it back yesterday since it was getting a bit tall- perhaps unnecessary to trim it really, but I do that once or twice per growing season and it comes right back and even more bushy. I also have a regular garden oregano border along the top of a rock wall terrace that’s working great in a tough dry part sun spot under a black walnut tree. And I have another oregano in my sun/pollinator garden that puts up tall purple flower spikes and the foliage turns purple in fall… I love oregano and luckily the deer hate it. Will have to try this Drops of Jupiter one out!

Another vote for creeping thyme as ground cover in areas with full sun. There is this company called Thyme Garden based on Oregon whom I ordered my creeping thyme seeds and they worked well for me. There is this area front of my property which is officially county land but is very neglected and had grown wild and infested with blackberry, when I bought the property I chopped it all back and has started planting flowers on it and also using creeping thyme to cover the ground so that I don't have to keep trimming the area with a string trimmer. Works well for me as the creeping thyme spreads quickly.

I think that is a brilliant plant to put in! It may be what I was looking for as edging. The mulch will help with controling the moisture. It keeps soggy areas drier, and dry areas more moist, pretty cool that way.

What a beautiful display and library area you have created! Wow! Thank you so much for reinforcing the benefits and uses of cardboard as a weed barrier. The use of cardboard is somewhat controversial, and I have some mixed thoughts about it. I tried some this year and it really did help with weed control. I too am keeping some on hand will be using more of it.

Creeping thyme is my favorite groundcover. Even though I suppose it's edible, I never use it for that. What I love about it is it doesn't mind being stepped on, although the bees aren't happy when I do so this time of year when it looks like a dreamy carpet of purple. I also love that it does such a fine job blocking out most weeds and is great at holding in moisture, though it is itself pretty drought tolerant, both of which are important factors in my California Zone 8b/9a garden.

Just letting you know I try to pay close attention! But you have also mentioned trying to think ahead to aging and not over taxing your body (you are so wise) and my question is do you use a hose to water and could you address watering tips during a drought as well as a new installation of plants.
