The Kentucky Coffee Tree is a species at risk in southern Ontario. Today we are preparing a seed for successful planting!

Update July 2021: A more complete Anishnaabemowin/Ojibwe name for this tree is possibly "gidagaa-bizhiwaatig", which roughly means "bobcat tree". The name used in the video ("biizhou aatig") is basically the latter part of that word, spelled slightly differently. Gichi miigwech (or thank you!) to Sunday Harrison from Greenthumbs for updating us!

Thanks for sharing this video. This is so well filmed, edited and narrated! Not only did I learn how to start the seeds I have gathered, I learned some Anishnaabe words and about Greenthumbs! I have gathered some Kentucky Coffee Tree pods in Prospect Cemetery (old cemeteries are good places to find rare trees) and I am going to try to propagate some trees.

I had one of these trees growing on my farm in Missouri. This was where the buffalo used to roam. I was told by one of the native people that they would block up a river or stream and throw the leaves inside it and all the fish would float up to the top. I thought it had a neurotoxin in it. . He told me they would roast the beans and grind them up and make copier they made tea out of it but so they showed the pioneers how to do it as they travel across the plains it is a very beautiful looking tree and seem to like growing in full season when you open up one of the seed pods it has a sweet smell inside it like bananas the Buffalo may have been the ones that were planning the tree

Beautiful video and story. I love the idea that when you were younger you were able to learn so much about trees. I think of so many people who do not know, or have any connection to the beautify of our natural environment and the amazing knowledge stored within the makeup and continuum of our trees and forest environments. Kentucky Coffee tree also makes a great city and street tree. Its hand-like branching of twigs make it easily identifiable in the winter landscape. As I was walking down the sidewalk in Center City Philadelphia today I noticed seeds on the ground and immediately looked up. Evidently the seeds were mature enough for the tree to disperse them from the pods. I picked up a small handful and will now do my part to add these to this continuing story. Thank you for helping me to learn something new.
