I plant with a knife the same way! I’ve grown a lot of African Violets, but never a Kohleria, but they are so pretty! I didn’t know they had a rhizome. I think I’m going to have to give one a try. Thanks for the video!

Thank-you! I have “Silver Feather”, and it has a flower bud! I too, got a bag of “worms” a year ago, at the club meeting. I pinch it back and tie stems loosely to a stick, this one’s about 18”. I really appreciate the direction on rooting its cuttings!

Excited for part two! My mother has a Kohleria that I was helping her with by cutting off all of the dead leaves. Some of the rhizomes were loose and above the ground. I thought exactly what you thought, that they were some sort of creature! But my mom assured me that they were rhizomes. So I brought some home with me and I will put them in the soil sideways as you did, and hope they grow! She doesn’t know the variety of plant, but it’s a cool purple with a white throat. I would love to purchase the color you have!

Tina, I love all your science experiments!! What better way to learn! I have to tell you all the plants and leaves I bought last Spring are still alive and doing well!! I'm so surprised. I thought for sure I'd kill them by now. LOL Can't wait to order more!

glad you are enjoying the videos Gladys and I like the science experiments too. I have a few more to do, this will answer all of those questions I could never answer because of techniques I never used before... Like you said, what better way to learn, just do it. lol If your leaves are doing well that means they have a good violet mama so congrats to you, this means you are doing a great job! Tina xx

Best not to use flowering stem for taking cuttings as they’re ‘programmed” to do that. Obviously there was no choice here, but if anyone else is doing this, best to try with a non flowering stem. Also, don’t split the rhizomes when the plant is growing. They will grow, but would be better to wait until the plant dies down, divide the rhizomes and replant in spring. It makes for a sturdier more robust plant.

If you want your Kohleria to grow more stocky, it probably needs more room, light and nutrients. One rhizome would be enough for the pot size you're using, in fact, one rhizome could even fill a up a larger pot. The variety you're growing doesn't get very tall, but its leaves can get bigger than my man hands. Of course, there's nothing wrong with keeping it smaller, the plant is just going to be less spectacular overall. If your windowsill doesn't get a lot of light in early spring, try keeping them dormant and starting them a few weeks later to avoid the plants getting leggy.

Aren't Kohlerias wonderful! I've grown them in the past. I like your little cutie. Another one that's easy to grow and doesn't get as leggy is Kohleria 'Manchu'. I can't wait for part 2.

H.. Really enjoyed watching your video. One question :after you stick the cuttings in the soil, do you dome the pot to assist in root development?

Is this the way to water kohleria? Place in a tub of water?
@BloomloversAfricanViolets5 жыл бұрын
This is actually a good way to water any plant, but the bottom, they take up what they need and then dump out what is left. Hugs, Tina xx
