Planting a True Rock Garden

In this video, I plant a true rock garden ― an actual garden on top of a rock. Boulder would be a better description as this piece of ancient stone is about three feet thick, and the top measures about eight by twelve feet! In this planting, I am first adding a dirt mixture, then I am putting in a flat (cardboard case for soda) full of Hens & Chicks (Sempervivum). Later in the year, I will be adding June Grass seed to get a few tufts of that growing as well. I’ll do an update in a short later in the summer.

Thanks Freddy. I hope it grows OK. It prefers gravely soil, but I believe this shallow soil will do the trick 🤞🏻

My wife over watered a small chick in the windowsill, and it sucked-up a TON of water and looks really bad! You are correct on the very little water/light part. It really strives on neglect! 😉

Good to see the rock get néw life. I have the smaller version, it's called cats and kittens.

I was reading-up on hens & chicks, and there are very many varieties. This one is cold hardy (It gets -40º pretty much every winter), but maybe the ones you have are a warmer loving version? Or maybe it's just another common name for Sempervivum? At any rate, it's a very interesting plant!

Hi Mojo, hens n chicks is an amazing plant,I read up that all cacti are succulent but not all succulents are cacti,I'm guessing that applies to hens n chicks.

That is correct! Hen's & Chicks are related to the Jade plant, and there are a zillion varieties. These are a cold-hardy variety, and are the best looking in my opinion 😉

Years ago, I planted one of these at the top of a stairway in our back lawn, and over the years it worked it's way all the way down to the bottom, and even over to the other side! Like you mentioned, if a piece rolls off it will start growing wherever it ends up 😊 The flowers can be a bit strange though. 🤔

We had something similar to that along Natalie and I's walk back when she was little. They had planted on both sides of the steps, and there were hens & chicks filling both sides and spilling onto the sidewalk. I plan to do something similar on the stairway to the dwarf orchard. 😊

Hardly use it anymore. I now use my DeWalt electric trimmer for grass, and my big 336fr with a blade on it for everything else.
