Few things in life are more elegant than beautiful, fragrant Roses. Spring is here and now is the perfect time to start planting for those gorgeous summer blooms!
TIPS:
If your Bare Root Rose comes packaged in dirt, remove the dirt and reserve it for planting later. You will need to soak the roots in a bucket of water for at least 6 hours (up to 24 hours).
Pre-mix your soil in a large container before adding to planter pots. I used a mixture of good potting soil, compost and the reserved packaged dirt. For the planters, use coffee filters to cover large drain holes. This prevents the soil from getting flushed out while still allowing for good drainage.
Add enough of the soil mixture to cover the bottom so that the bottom of your Rose stem sits in the upper 1/3 of your planter. Use a skewer to determine how high the soil level will be. It should be above where the stem branches off from the main stem to protect the stem and possible graft. (see video)
Mix into your planter soil Organic Epsoma Rose Tone per the package instructions.
Trim the tips of your roots and stems to encourage new growth. Sprinkle the roots and soil with a teaspoon of Mycorrhizal Fungi for strong root development.
Sit your Rose into its bed and cover with remaining soil, gently pressing to secure it in its new home.
For this presentation I am planting Floribunda Moonlight in Paris. It is a pale pink and soft apricot shrub rose that will produce large clusters of blooms.

I ordered some bare-root roses from California. They came with no soil whatsoever. I was told to soak them in water for 12 to 24 hours. They had to be constantly watered for 3 weeks. The canes had to be pruned 4 to 6 inches. I now have 3 inch new growth all over the plant. I directly planted mine in the ground with a thin layer of mulch on top. Hopefully they'll produce blooms this year.

I purchased these roses at a store, but it is very common that when you order bare root roses from nurseries that they don't have soil at all. That is why it is very important to soak them before planting. It is a very good sign that your newly planted roses have a lot of new growth already. It is most likely they will have blooms this year. 😊🌹

Out of curiosity how big of pots do you use? I have 14 inch pots at the moment and my roses are starting season 2. Pots are just so dang expensive lol.

For these roses I used pots that are 16 inches tall and 17 inches across on the top. I agree, most pots are very expensive. I buy many of my pots used and then either whitewashe them, treat them to grow more moss for added patina or sometimes paint them. If they are plastic you can use certain techniques to make them look like stone or cement.

I notice you put coffee filters at the bottom of the container. Does it really work to help keep the hole from getting clogged?

Yes, it has always worked for me so far. It is actually so the soil won't get flushed out when the plant gets watered. 🙂

What were the first item you added? Peat moss? How about the 2nd bag? Chicken poop? Or bone meal

I used potting soil and mixed in some compost. I also added an organic rose fertilizer called Rose Tone from espoma. I sprinkled the roots with mycorrhizal fungi to ensure good root development. Happy planting 🌹
