Planting Bareroot Roses with Paul Zimmerman

Bareroot roses might look intimidating to those who haven’t grown them yet, but they are actually quite reliable and easy to grow. Watch as Rose Expert and Author of Everyday Roses, Paul Zimmerman, takes you through the process of planting a bareroot rose.
First things first: remove the rose from its packaging and soak the roots in water for 24 to 48 hours. This helps wake the rose from dormancy and also moistens the roots so that they don’t dry out in the soil.
Next, dig a nice large planting hole. Amend the soil you removed with some organic fertilizer (Paul uses composted manure). Mix the compost in, then add some back into the planting hole until you have a nice cone for your rose’s root ball to sit on. Just be sure that you are planting the rose deep enough to bury the bud union completely. This will help reduce suckers and the damage that frost/thaw cycles can do.
Backfill the hole a little bit, then water that in before adding the rest of the soil and mulch. Then water again. Remember that you want the roots to stay nice and moist, especially while the rose is waking up and getting established in its new home.
