Love your “Jose the neighbor” garden! We need to plant our garlic, too. Our garlic bed has been neglected for a couple of years, but we have German hard necked garlic, and elephant garlic. And we agree, scapes are super yummy! Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!

Once the garlic has achieved a frozen state at 25 to 32°F that is about as cold as the garlic will get, once it’s frozen it will not get colder. So planting the garlic deeper does affect the garlic because it needs to use up its energy to push through Extra soil.

I assume you are in zone 8 roughly. It's recommended to plant a softneck garlic in early December for the best production. Good luck!

I don't really use a recipe. I eyeball all of my measurements and adjust to taste. Just blend scapes in a food processor. Add pine nuts (almonds can be used), high quality parm cheese and quality olive oil. Salt and pepper to taste. I make large batches because it freezes well. This stuff is amazing and goes well on almost anything. Try it on pizza! Cheers!

Is the scape is the most flavorful? I want to plant hard neck garlic, but every time I try to get some, everyone is out. But I will triumph! Lol

It's a milder garlic flavor with the texture of asparagus. It's really good stir fried or grilled but can be used in countless ways. A real treat that you normally would never have access to without growing them yourself. Garlic tends to sell out quickly in the fall so it's best to order them as soon as they are listed. Good luck!

I'm in 6B. 2nd year of growing. In ground. Freaking out that I didn't cover mine in enough straw and soon enough? Just finished straw on 12/31. However, how deep should it be? I put EZ straw w/ tacker on, but it's almost .5 or 1 inch - is it even enough?

Yes, that should be ok. Garlic requires a certain number of freeze hours to initiate growth in the spring. Many people store their garlic in the freezer. I would only be concerned if there was an extended period of extreme cold. However, thus has been a very mild winter so I think your garlic is fine. I would suggest burying it a little deeper in the future but no worries.
