In stead of cutting the pot like that you can hold it in a bucket of water and the roots will separate on their own just don't water it right after you plant it.

I had a barrel cactus rot out in a pot in my yard. I used cactus mix in pot and had another barrel cactus in it too. I had peanut cactus in the pot also. Not sure what to change here as the other cactus didn’t rot and again I’ve had heavy rains here. It rains in the deserts so again are these planted in heavy gravel or what?

I added perlite to soil after I took rotted barrel cactus out.
