Paul's How to Grow video today is all about planting Asparagus Crowns in containers; the variety is Backlim. Though growing in containers / pots will shorten the life compared to growing in the ground we are hopeful of a good three or four years of harvests from these container grown Asparagus plants. This video is part of Paul's Grow Along series of what to sow and grow each month.

It is so long since I grew them, and when I got to the splaying of the roots bit I had to start filming again... me doing it took me 46 years back to doing it with dad and the tears started flowing. 🤗

Good luck. I put in 10 asparagus crowns in March/April 2019. Didn't take anything that year of course, but only got about three spears last year. We just ate them raw on the plot and they were one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. So much better than shop bought. I manured the bed a week or so ago and I'm hoping for a bigger crop this year.

Yay for perfect timing!! 👍😊👍 We sowed some seeds a few years back which we sold at the Hanwell Carnival to raise funds for the allotment association. 👍 I can't believe it's 46 years since I last handled Asparagus Crowns though! 🤗

Hi Paul, good project, I guess in about 3yrs you could start another few tubs so when these end their production time, tou already have others to harvest from, then start again with the old 5ur old tubs, I may try this myself as I also have limited space for now. Have a great weekend ❤🍁

Well, next year I plan to sow some Asparagus seeds which I can then grow on into crowns to potentially replace the ones in containers in a good few years time. 👍🤞👍

55 gal plastic drum. Fill 2/3 with dry fall leaves. Pour urine on the leaves for a couple weeks. Mash down a bit and add some water. Put in a layer of used coffee grounds on top. Sprinkle some desired fertilizer on the grounds. LIGHTLY. Fish emulsion is supposed to work well. Fill with 3" of potting soil, plant crowns, and cover with another 3-4 inches of potting soil. When they get several inches above the soil, add in the rest of the potting soil to fill the drum. Be sure to make some 1" holes staggered around the drum to let air in. As leaves rot, they make a rich compost. Everything will eventually settle so keep adding in more compost/leaf mold, potting soil every few months. Water well initially. And again if dry (finger depth or so). Be sure to have the bung hole open in the bottom of the barrel. Or make at least one for drainage. Barrel should mimic being in the ground, easier weeding and harvesting (no bending). Easier watering too for many folks. You can also plant a companion crop in the same barrel if desired. Something shallow rooted so as to not take much from the soil. Shades the soil to slow evaporation on hot dry days. Can repel pests and actually resemble a big flower planter. You could do this with a 30 gallon plastic trash can (Rubbermaid) as well.

Thank you for the video, it was very helpful! Could you please explain why planting them in the pots shorten their life so much? I can't really plant them anywhere else, so do not have any choice. Another question: I don't have any manure but I can buy blood and bone fertiliser or seasol. Would that suffice?
@paulsavident
@paulsavident 5 күн бұрын
It's simply that asparagus develops a complex and potentially large root system so they get constrained by the pot, as they would likely not be in the ground. 👍 Being vegetarian I would not use your first fertiliser choice, and I believe more potassium is needed so would go with the seasol option. 👍😊👍

Hi Paul. I grow Mooli radishes and Lungo Rosso in olives cans that are tall ... cash and carry size stuff ! I have started my salsify and fennel in long cardboard tubes and placed them in buckets ... I will plant them in soil when they are big enough , hopefully the roots won’t be disturbed . I love asparagus but don’t grow them . My allotment plot is very small I.e half a plot ! 😭 😭

I didn't even know you could get crowns to plant. I've always used seeds. They didn't take last time I planted. Maybe this year. I remember asparagus bushes growing on the south side of the house as a kid. We rarely harvested in time for the tender stalks, so we ended up with wonderful bushes. I don't mind waiting a couple of years to harvest if I get the lovely fronds to look at. ~ Jon in rural BC, Canada

@paulsavident
@paulsavident 3 жыл бұрын
In the ground around 20+ spears a year, though in pots I am hoping for a minimum of a dozen a year, maybe even as many as when in the ground if I look after them well and top up with good mulch each year, plus well rotted horse manure. 🤞

Ok . . This comment has nothing to do with gardening. I try to watch most ads. BUT, in the last, maybe 6 or so months, more and more ads are 1hr or more, infomercials. Had I let these ads run today, it would have taken me 3hrs to watch your 13 min. video. I think this is unfair to the content creators that this is happening. I do not know if this is something that content creators can do anything about with KZbin. I enjoy your videos (and Richards's). I do find them informative and fun. Have a wonderful day.
