I put a layer of sand over top of the soil, about 2 inches. That keeps the soil in place. I set the tank up over 2 years ago with lucky bamboo, pothos, a huge monstera, fish and mystery snails. It doing great and the plants grow very well. Sand is cheap, but rinse it before putting it in the aquarium.

@@jagman1953 Thank you! I did consider sand. But I imagined that it would just end up getting mixed up with the dirt somehow. However, I wasn't imagining a deep amount of sand, which I wish I did think about. Because that does make sense. Unfortunately for me, it is already too late to change it. Because I have already scrapped the use of dirt. Which is what part 2 is partly about. I am glad to know that there is an option that works for using dirt and not having problems with it. Thank you for sharing! Your tank sounds amazing!
