To aid root development and moisture uptake, try laying the transplant horizontally in a shallow ditch...then cover with soil. New roots will grow from the buried stem making the plant take up more water. Geotropism will make the plant turn upward. Later, pull off any leaves with fungus.

The strawberries look good. A tip for planting tomatoes, All the hairs on the stem will turn in to roots, when you bury (plant them). In the long run, I have found it give the tomato a good strong vigorous growth. You should only do this before the blossoms have opened on the plant.

I love a garden best when it's early in the season. I sure hope you don't lose any plants to slugs and snails. I know you like to be organic, so do I. But my plants are MY food, not theirs! I finally decided to use a product called Sluggo Plus. It worked great against a number of pests. You spread it on the soil, not the plant leaves, flowers, or fruit. That way it doesn't kill good insects. I wish you the very best of luck and good fortune. I look forward to watching your garden grow!

Your tomatoes are exactly like mine. Here in northern France we had no spring at all. But the slugs & snails are loving it, so I'm putting copper tape everywhere, as your video on that has given me confidence that it works 👍🏻

You are a busy lady; I watch your camping videos pretty often. I am trying to get mine fully planted, after a terrible late frost in Indiana.

Lilly, Can't wait to see how your tomatoes are coming along!! I've tried a new technique for improving self pollination, and it seems to be working. I've started vibrating the flowers with the back of my electric toothbrush. A nice little puff of pollen issues forth, so I figure that's getting the job done inside the flower. If you don't have an electric toothbrush, any vibratory appliance should work. I don't judge.....;-)

I have a lot of slugs too (in Erfurt). Last year bear traps worked very well. This year I've left attractive places for them to hide, like under damp cardboard or wood. It's been very effective. I caught about 20 today.

congratulations Lilly those are very healthy tomato plants. You can plant them in the ground above the bottom leaves. They like it. A fish or an egg placed below the tomato really fertilizes those plants and a seaweed solution will prevent plant droop after transplanting. I'm jealous as my toms have just come up. PSSST. Can you teach me that finger-clicking trick? I'm a lazy sod.

Its been unseasonably cool here in North Texas as well. Not often do we start off planting tomatoes wearing a coat.

Lillys tomato plants are rather big comparted to ours. I think this is becasue she has a greenhouse. I live in Leipzig, Germany and it is normally warmer her, than in Austria where Lilly lives. But same here, it was extraordinary cool, this spring. even in begin of May there were severals nowfalls here, which happens maybe once every 100 years.

@@stegershomeandgarden.6971 you're right. Maybe after stopping all air pollution due to Corona it comes to a normalization. Scientists say all, the climate should be rather very cooler than it is now. so maybe this could be the new normal.

Glad to see a new gardening vid! Your tomato plants look very healthy. I look forward to seeing how each variety performs. When we set ours out I water them with diluted fish emulsion- it eases the tranplant shock and gives them a good start to Summer growing. what else will you be growing this year? Also, can we see what is happening with your mother's garden in a future video? Thanks!

Yeah this spring was overall pretty cold where i live (bavaria) I also used candles in my beds to keep the tomatoes somewhat warm. But it seems to get colder in late may again. Really not great thos year compared to last year 😓
@ИванИванов-ъ1д6н3 жыл бұрын
It is better not to water tomatoes with cold water. And during watering, you do not need to wet the leaves. Better to pour water near the root ☺️✌️

Lilly, do you grow any legumes/beans for protein? What about yams? I'm going to try to grow yams this year in my garden. Thanks for the idea about copper rings around the plant! Where did you get the copper rings. One final question--how do you keep avian predators away from you plants. I've had an idea for a kind of mechanical scarecrow with a motion sensor inside so that it flaps around whenever the birds descend. ;-)
