Its been a very wet Autumn and early Winter, we only got the land back in November so we are late getting the wheat in for so many reasons. I thought I would give you a break from a small red tractor and share a pair of big blue ones instead. I cant offer much technical information as these are a contractors machines, I am sure you will be seeing them again throughout this next year.

Happy New Year!! Nice video, just subbed, looking forward to see the progress of the crop. When you flew over the other fields there was standing water, 5-29 onwards. We will see !!!!!!

That's crazy here in Canada we try to till the field as little as possible to maintain compaction due to erosion and other reasons also we wouldn't even think of dropping a piece of equipment into ground that has standing water like that mind you we deal with a lot bigger fields our fields are usually 160acre for a quarter section some farms farm a full section as one field but not super common and the amounts of land a farm has is usually a couple thousand acres is pretty normal size farm some of the bigger ones in the 10s of thousands and the occasional 100 thousand farm those are rare Your playing with 8-10ft equipment maybe smaller we play with upwards of 70ft for the big air seeders 20-30ft is mall for most farms most swathers are 35ft headers lots of the time mind you that's as big as they get as our land isn't flat enough to use bigger a 300hp field tractor is small a 450hp-600hp 4x4 articulated tractor is pretty normal here heck we have 500hp front wheel assist now as we now have the fendt 1050 that's a ridiculously big front wheel assist even for here very little equipment we have will ever make it grunt and it doesn't put the traction down that a 4x4 articulated tractor will

Kraig Duncan Unfortunately our country roads are hundreds or even thousands of years old Kraig. No point in massive machinary if you can’t move it about. I also think land prices per acre or hectare are a tad higher over here. Good ground can reach Ten thousand pounds per acre. Generations of farmers sons splitting land and death duty taxes have reduced many of the big farms down to a few hundred acres. It’s the economy of scale. Canada and North America etc has far more, we have much less.
@Kraigthecanadian
@Kraigthecanadian 5 жыл бұрын
Farmer P its very interesting to me the differences between our countries you can make a better living with less our economies are so very different our economy is very much based on high quantity with as little effort as possible but it seems your economy is based more on quality and doing it the best way possible and make the most out of everything here there is so much waist as we under cut everything so far its not even worth touching that waisted space in a field or go the extra mile cause the time and cost to do it is more that we would get out of it even your equipment is built to do specific tasks that it does very well where as ours is built to be as versatile as possible making it decent at lots but master at none Heck you said one example your self your roads hold up for a long time our roads are garbage in a short time as it is the mentality to do fast and cheap instead of quality and put time money and effort into it and it will last so much longer its so amazing how very different yet similar our countries are

James Williams The land has been ours for a few generations James, in fact the family moved to the farm over 400 years ago. Most of it was rented out to neighbouring dairy farmers but one of them gave it up late last year so when I was asked if we should keep it and farm it ourselves.... I said yes. It all happened a bit suddenly, we had to start somewhere so we decided to start with 65 acres of wheat. I now have a steep learning curve to get over, my crop husbandry training at Hartpury college was back in the mid 1980s, stuff has moved on since then 😬😄

@FarmerP
@FarmerP 5 жыл бұрын
Nigel Gribble It’s even wetter now, I’m glad we did it when we did. The drill sailed through most of it, struggled through some of the wet patches to be sure but the options were limited. We only took the ground back from a long term tenant in November he grew grass and maize and chucked an awful lot of 🐂💩 on it. The good news is the soil is actually very good, in fact some of the best in the area, and chock full of worms too.

Bob Elgin We are very fortunate with a lot of our land, many of our neighbours still can’t get a tractor out on the fields. This particular section of ground is only sloppy on the top 2” Bob, it’s on top of the hill and fairly well drained, all the lower ground (where we were crow scaring) was planted in December, when we had another dry week.

River Mersey yes very much so things like the difference between spinning tires and making progress vs spinning and getting stuck there's very obviously a good base and no real worries of getting stuck more than just lift a bit to put more weight on the tractor where we come from we have no where near the moisture you get there so the ground is more loose and dry if it looks like that standing water you will sink in like a rock and very rapidly find your diffs sitting on the ground in a soft spot things like ruts in the field hugely effect our crop and can be the difference between breaking even and making money we try to disturb the soil as little as possible and only when it gets to dense of compaction will we work it up never would you see a seeder following a plow at minimum we would have to cultivate or disc it to get it broke up enough and smooth enough usually we only disc up the first 5" so we don't break up our base and dry the ground out to much our ground is so very different from yours it's crazy

orkid knog I am no expert when it comes to plough work Orkid, it looked good to me, everything is turned over and covered within a very short window of opportunity. This ground has had no tillage below 2” deep for years and there is still a lot of slurry residue left over from our our recent tenant. The general consensus is it will take a few years to get the soil structure back to where we want it.
