Can Mars dirt grow plants? If not can you make it grow plants? Add nutrients and water, will it work? Like a fertilizer for Mars dirt.

It can be done. But it needs atmosphere

Mars soil has toxic perchlorate ions at about 1% concentration which can kill you in many different ways acutely and chronically but I think that I saw a paper saying that plants grown in it didn’t themselves contain the toxin.

Great video, thanks. So interesting. Plants are truly aware. I have a making-of question. Who's responsible for the hot pink and green lighting in the Growth Chamber on the International Space Station? Is that how NASA/JPL shot it? Or did you guys tweak it in post? Rock 'n' Roll!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/imOofmOcZrShjZqZry interesting. I wanted to take a same plant and start with one spices in full dirt, than go the second with a little moon soil/mars soil on up to full Martian or moon soil

A new wave of research shows that “pink” light - a mix of red and blue wavelengths is all that a plant really needs to grow. The green light is usually reflected by leaves - that's why most of leaves look green. Also that's why newly hardware in ISS is using "pink" light. The "green light" you see in this video is actually due to the old camera, in which experiment the old hardware generated white light.

+enialessej Its a model organism. Easy to grow, the genome has been sequenced. Its what all plant scientists do research on when trying to understand plants in general. Other model organisms include bacterium E. coli, Bakers yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster fruit fly, or lab mouse Rattus norevegitus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_organism
