The Money Tree, or Pachira aquatica, is one of the all around very best houseplants that everyone can have success growing. These lovely indoor trees can live for decades, over time often creating bulbous unique trunks. They often come with pre-braided trunks that look amazing over time. In this video I give a brief background on the plants, talk about their general care, give tips for keeping their braids in tact, and finish up with techniques for generating thick trunks, including root pruning. #moneytree #houseplants #plants

Hi Devin. You just saved my money tree. Putting it outside to dry out did the trick! It was overwatered, and now looks fabulous. Also your advice about needing to be pot bound before transplanting was well taken! Thanks, you really love plants.

Im really sorry to hear about your loss :( what you are describing sounds like a foliar fungus, not very serious but can spread throughout the plant and is caused by irregular watering typically. My suggestion is to cut the plant back like I showed and place outside in a shady location once weather permits and it’ll flush out new growth and start a new chapter. Blessings to you

Hi, my daughter just gave me a Japanese money tree for Mother’s Day. She bought it from a farmers market. It is not braided at all. Just one trunk(diameter around base is about 12 inches, height about 9 inches). It has two very long skinny shoots and a few smaller shoots.. what do i do with this? Can i braid the shoots and go from there?

Hello. Thanks for sharing. Your plants are beautiful. I inherited a 20 year old Pachira and it's not doing very well. It grew without braiding and appears weak. Will it be possible to cut the 3 stems you have, place them to take root, plant and braid them? And discard the entire current base where the braid is, as it is quite dry (it looks ugly). Thank you

Thanks for the great video! Please, I have a question and hope for some help. We have a money tree in our house (based in UK). It has grown in a full on tree, reaching the ceiling of the room. It is quite close to a window so it does have some direct light, the window is orientated south west. It is braided with four main small trunks, each one of them generating a branch. The question is, the branches have gone really long and high. Now, all the leaves of the lower part have gone quite yellow and I had to remove them. Leaving 3/4 of the plant without leaves. Only having leaves in the high part of the tree. Is there a way for us to bring some growth to the lower part of the tree? Is pruning going to help? I hope it makes sense and I am open to any suggestion! Thanks.

@@plantvibrations CLARIFICATION: Thank u for replying so quickly I bought my plant (small pot, 1 foot tall) from a store last year. Lol, I wish I could send or post a photo. I'll do my best to describe . . . Looking at the leaves & stems now, each has a singular stem growing up, which branch off into multiple leaves. The new stems r about 8 inches tall. If I'm understanding correctly, if I cut back to where the the stems start to look woodier, it looks like it would be back to where the plant was originally pruned to before being shipped for selling (cut the 8 inches new stems off, down to the top of the main trunks). Would that sound correct? Would pruning this much still encourage the trunk to grow in height & more full foliage? Or should I wait 1 or 2 years (allow the new stem growths to get a bit woody) before I prune? Thanks in advance!🙏🏻

Help please! I bought a money tree plant in October, I repotted it and it began to drop leaves and leaves where turning yellow and have notches in them. It took about a month or more for the soil to dry out so I became worried about root rot so I stopped watering. I also became concerned that I may have planted the trunk a little to low in the soil, so is pushed the soil away from the trunk. It seemed to help it came back and with lots of new foliage. But now here it is May I haven't lost anymore leaves since December or any yellow leaves. BUT now I noticed one of the trunks on it is dried out at the bottom like if its dehydrated. Is there any way of saving it? Any recommendations? Thank You

We have a money tree whose trunks didn't grow twisted. It was a gift for my husband. He just let the trunks grow straight up. Can we twist the stalks now or will it kill the plant? The plant is probably about 15 years old. Plus it's getting too tall and has surpassed the top of the windows. Is there a way to shorten it or cut it back? I know this is a lot. We don't know what to do and don't want to kill it.

My daughter accidentally threw the plant over causing all of the soil to come out. Since then it has been dying. Is it possible that the tree was damaged? All the leaves are turning yellowish. I notice the soil wasn't compact anymore and I just press the soil together to make the it more compact. It's always been in indirect sunlight and was thriving and I watered it maybe every 7-10 days it drained well. Sigh😢. I hope this helps because I just became a plant mom and was doing so well with this until her accident.
@plantvibrations

It should definitely bounce back! Give it some time to recover and remove any leaves that may be yellowing. If possible place outside in a shaded area during summer and it’ll bounce back even quicker

@@plantvibrations Thank you for responding. I noticed yesterday that the soil was holding onto the wate. I watered it over a week ago and it was still damp at the top. I'm almost certain that's not supposed to happen. Plus I had to pull up one of the roots because it was to soaked and rotted. I don't know if I poured too much water(well I guess I did ). Should I leave it outside all day? I put it on the Western side today against the Sun then brought it in right before the sun hits that side. I did that yesterday and still I have more yellow leaves after pruning it and putting it outside. Should I change the soil or just wait it out to see if it rebounds?

Add some fresh potting soil and perlite. Be sure your pot has a drain hole. Watch that the leaves do not get sun burned.

Im not sure I would call it a gimmick. Unnatural yes, but so is keeping plants indoors. Generally I would agree with the sentiment though, to keep things natural regarding forcing, unnecessary pruning etc, but the braiding does create a full looking plant

Finally, somebody else who isn’t afraid to root prune! I’ve seen so many people taking hours to comb out, or trying to untangle miles of roots into single strands with a little rake then pruning an inch or two off of each one 😂. The bread knife (or saw if the 😖plant is really huge) is by far the easiest, and I think best method. Well done that man 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫢
