The Disney deal has pretty well killed Doctor Who in Australia. We've always had it free-to-air on the ABC with publicity, repeats, good rating and public awareness. The 50th annivesary was a big deal here and even had well attended cinema screenings. No-one knew (apart from fans) about the 60th anniversary, or 'season 1', as it was never publicised by Disney. Hopefully if the deal with Disney fails, we can go back to the ABC.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but gotta say the amount of advertising I've seen, either as part of a Disney+ package or specifically for DW itself, all over Sydney this year has really surprised me. It had a huge billboard all to itself right outside the main entrance to Sydney airport just before the season kicked off, and it's been all over the advert screens in the underground stations, including right now with Disney's lead up to Xmas trailer. It's kinda surreal sometimes.

Sorry but I don't think it's anything to do with the ABC/Disney/Whoever is airing it. The show currently being made is crap - Plain and Simple. I shared my Disney+ account with all my friends/entire family to let them watch... and most couldn't finish the season. The ones who did get through, asked what the hell is wrong with me?! They were appalled. Put it back in the ice, or at minimum get rid of RTD/Moffat and any former writers from the past 25 years!

I think this era has had so many missteps that they are all catching up. The soft rebooting at the end of the 60th. (The whole season 1 and also being series 14.) Messing with the lore of the show for no reason and not making it apart of the plot. (Bigeneration, Susan, etc) RTD isn't as good at show running and writing for Doctor Who as he used to be (Season 1/Series 14) Poor writing and plots. (Space Babies, TLORS, and Empire of Death) The lack of new writers. Lack of episodes. And lack of the Doctor in two of them. Not being able to connect with the Doctor and Ruby (73 Yards/Dot and Bubble) Release timing in Summer. The Show should come out early/later in the year (April/May or Oct/Nov) No returning villains (Daleks/Cyberman/etc) Pointless plot devices with no payoff (The Masters Ring/Susan Twist/Mrs. Flood) The Doctor is too emotional in every episode. Making a spinoff when the show isn't doing great. Would have rather had that money put into making the seasons longer. Tales of the Tardis not being available for international viewers but making it important to the finale's plot.

Disney+ in the USA did a terrible job advertising the show esp before the start of the last season. Too few shows, forced scripts with the tight time length, no advertising, FX look great but at what costs given the time delays and extreme costs. To wait a year or two for 8 shows is a "why bother?" to fans.

I unsubbed from disney + because they upped the price & with only a bare minimum of episodes it just wasn't worth the money given that I'm interested in absolutely nothing else that disney + offers on there.

This does make sense if you consider the theory that the show is repeating itself. Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston were new attempts at reviving the show and spent most of their tenure on modern-day Earth. Tom Baker and David Tennant were the most popular Doctors. Peter Davison and Matt Smith were the youngest actors to take the role when cast and lead the show into a darker era. Colin Baker and Peter Capaldi had both appeared on the show before as another character, the show went on a slight hiatus and their tenures could be considered the darkest part of the show's history. Sylvester McCoy and Jodie Whittaker both had a different accent from previous Doctors and were the same height (yes, i'm stretching a bit here) and the idea of the Timeless Child is similar to the Cartmel Masterplan that was going to be shown before the series was cancelled. Paul McGann and Ncuti Gatwa are the Doctors while the show was in the hands of the Americans. So if the show gets cancelled then it would only fit with the theory.

I'll be sad if Disney leaves Doctor Who. It's been so hard to follow the Doctor legally here in Sweden, before Disney took over. On the other hand, I would cancel the Disney app if there were no Doctor Who, saving some money.

Yes, this past season the short season hurts the show. I find that ruining many long running shows I liked like the Star Treks short seasons. 2 years wait makes people forget why they even watch the show esp with Dr Who not time to linger and get to know characters, that is what is really hurting Dr Who now these short frenetic scripts.

No. It is the storylines and we don't need Disney for that. If they want to back out, it is their loss, not Doctor Who's.

Dr has started to become trash when Chinball got his hands on it. Jodie Whittaker could have been a good Doctor but got handed an absolute shit sandwich and the 'Timeless Child' storyline ruined her reputation by association. The Mouse getting hold of it just pumped more money into something it's director's were kicking off a cliff. Ditch Disney, fire RTD, retcon the 'Timeless Child ' lore breaker out of existence and MAYBE we can get back the show we loved.

Disney may be putting up money for the right to broadcast it on their channel but they don't own it. They don't sponsor the character option toys figures or annuals, calendars, posters etc. I've watched the show since the age of 8 in 1970 when the brilliant Jon Pertwee started and the show was made in colour. The classic seasons lasted 26 years before the BBC stopped making it. It might not be a bad idea to rest it now for a while. Gatwa doesn't have the same appeal for me as previous actors who have played the part. He's not even in the same league as Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee. There's a lot of stories from the last series that were crap. When I want a Doctor Who fix I watch classic who because I grew up with them. 2025 will be the 20th year for new who. Shame it would end then but things have a shelf life. When I was your age I watched it every Saturday afternoon for the 23 mins part of the story that was on and we got a cliffhanger. Please bring the cliffhangers back because we had to wait until next week to see what happened next. Yes, we had wobbly sets and bubble wrap costumes but the stories were amazing.

Doctor Who is going to go bye-bye for many years, as it did when the classic series ended. While RTD absolutely should be praised for bringing Doctor Who back in 2005, and making it a worldwide sensation really for the first time in its history, nonetheless he, like his buddy Chibnal, introduced some very weird and devisive elements into the recent series that has resulted in declining viewership, and is going to end in its doom. And no, nobody else is going to pick it up given its recent viewership history and the controversies surrounding it. Why RTD did this is a stupifying mystery to me, but he did it (as the old Sinatra song goes) HIS way. Doctor Who WILL be back, probably many years in the future, but after Series Two, I think we're not going to see any new Who for a LONG time. Such a shame for Ncuti, who I personally feel makes a fantastic Doctor (as did Jodie, God bless her).

Agreed. Watching Who since Pertwee. It's bizarre to me the amount of copium going on. The show has been garbage in recent years and people somehow are surprised. It's not Disney. It's the inability of the BBC to produce a quality show - writing and actors. And continuing to double down on garbage and wondering why it is still in decline. Recent interviews with Capaldi, who is a scholar of the show, great actor, and a superfan himself, say as much as he can on this topic.

Same with Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi. Even Whittaker had the people’s goodwill behind her and she started off with 11 MILLION! Unfortunately, the stories were awful and people stopped watching in their millions and her era ended in a dreadful state. RTD Did admit that casting Gatwa was a risk so why did he cast him? Then to make matters worse his writing is now atrocious. It needs new writers working on it. People who know about science and can give us more mature stuff. Let’s have Charlie Brooker & Ben Wheatley working on it and cast an older unusual looking actor in the role of the Doctor. The complete opposite of Gatwa, someone scruffy and very eccentric. It needs to get away from the sexualisation of the Doctor which RTD has been pushing for since he supposedly brought it back. Maybe Laurence Rickard or Michael Sheen?

Why did he cast him? Because that's how the fucking show works. Do you think the previous Doctors were safe options? Do you think Peter Capaldi wasn't risky after Matt Smith? Or Tom Baker after Jon Pertwee? Or Troughton after Hartnell? New Doctor castings should be risky. Also I hate to break it to you, but this so called "sexualisation of the Doctor" you speak of has become an integral part of the show. The revival was as successful as it was because of duos like Ten/Rose. Appealing to that younger teen audience is what made the show a smash hit, and no longer this embarrassing cheaply made show that only nerds from the 80s watched.

The original show had an educational bent, which was why there were historical stories in the first few seasons. The BBC wanted kids to learn history through a science fiction show about time travel.

I am wondering if all that stagnation in topic of cooperation is caused by what is happening on the US political scene right now. I am not an expert in that area, being European but doesn't Trump promised to set high taxes etc for goods shipped from other countries itc? Who knows how Trump's reign affects movie industry. I personally really loved this past season and I'm ppving Ncuti as the Doctor and I hope we will be able to keep Fifteen for at least 2 more seasons (seasons 3 and 4)
