A zero-waste lifestyle of eating on banana leaves reduces plastic pollution. It is eco-friendly and garbage-free because the leaves can later be eaten by milch animals or decompose themselves and go back to earth.
Cups and plates made from banana leaves form an integral part of Northeast Indian rituals. Also, during feasts, food used to be served on banana leave plates and cups. Lotus leaves are also used in place of banana leaves. With decreasing farming land area, however, this age-old culture is getting costlier.
1. Banana trees bear fruit only once in their lifetime and they die. So, the leaves are cut off and used. They will rot anyway if not used.
2. Even before the trees bear fruit, leaves are cut but only the mature ones. in a whole plantation, one leaf of a tree doesn't hurt.
3. Matured leaves dry up and fall off. We are using material that would have gone wasted.
4. In different parts of India, leave like these are used mostly during religious ceremonies and of course, after the ceremony is over they are fed to Domestic animals. They are sometimes piled in dumps. They eventually turn into manure.
In keeping with our aim of bringing to you a range of experiences from across Manipur- both good and bad, beautiful and ugly - we have found yet another rare story in an endeavour to showcase different aspects of Northeast Indian life. With the world changing fast, old customs are dying rapidly. The new generation has little to no idea about our old ways of life.
