PLASTIC SOPRANO RECORDER COMPARISON. Aulos 503B Symphony and Yamaha YRS-302BIII

A brief comparison of my two plastic soprano instruments. I'm using them both as solo and consort instruments and they have proved very reliable. Although plastic, I'd say that each one has its own character.

A good use for a the thumb rest is it stops the recorder rolling off the table when you put it down after playing!

Thanks for sharing. I have no doubts that for a duller and softer sound the AUlos is perfect, however for something louder the Yamha is perfect. I'm going to buy a tenor aulos and a soprano aulos since the baroque soprano hohner that I have made of wood is limited in the high B and the high C and I need something that works well. Your video makes it clear to me which one I'm going to buy. I will buy the two of the same brand since in terms of tuning I do not know if the Yamaha will be higher or lower in soprano with respect to the tenor of Aulos. @@nickperpirakis2211 Yes, recently I was able to see it and I liked it a lot, although I think I think as your teacher, I will choose Aulos, although you can already see on my channel that I play with a Yamaha alto saxophone. I really like the brand but its sound seems a little more strident, brighter. For playing in the street I think it's great, but recording almost I prefer the Aulos. I bought this Aulos 503b flute. I wanted to ask you: Is it normal for there to be a slight concavity inside the third piece of the flute, near hole 7? Does the second octave E note sound a little hoarse to you? My soprano flute has those details. I have the tenor flute and it doesn't have that.

I don’t understand what you mean about “concavity”. Is there an extra hole? As for the e I’d say that it’s hard to make it heard crystal clear

@@nickperpirakis2211 When I look inside the third piece of the flute, near the 7th double hole, there is a concavity. This concavity looks like they wanted to make a third hole but didn't. It seemed like a strange element to me.

Thanks for your answer. I see that the sound of the tenor 511 is much better than the soprano 503. I am waiting for an aulos 509 flute, and I will see if the quality is similar to the tenor. I have the aulos 309 and its sound is not very reliable in some high notes, which does not happen with the tenor, I returned the aulos 209 since its bass was too weak. From what I have been seeing in comments, I see that of the sinfonia series only the tenor, alto and garklein are the most recommended.

@@xarv368 I agree. For years I have use the Yamaha for practice. I needed a sopranino and I got the Aulos Symphony to compare with other plastic ones. I have tried wooden ones but they are all too small for my hands. I use them for Church playing. I was impressed with the Aulos so much I got the soprano and the alto. Both are better than Yamaha but I still use them for practice I use the soprano at Church as well. It is sweet. I could use my concert wood sopranos. I use a Mollenhauer Modern alto which is what I use mostly at Church.

Nick, so sorry you are so shy and don't even show your face. Perhaps you have your reasons but you play well and it would be nice to get your verbal opinion and observation on the instruments you are comparing. I love the recorders. I am new to this and just bought my first recorder. It's a Yamaha Soprano recorder baroque (Ecodear) YRS-402B. Just wondered if you'd ever tested one out. Keep playing and enjoy.

I haven’t played on this Yamaha model, but I have heard that it is marvellous. This was my very first KZbin video and it was awkward. In the following videos I’m showing my face 😅. As far for the speaking, my English aren’t that fluent to support a presentation in a video 🙂

I do like videos comparing different makes and models of recorders but I am sure purchasing all these different recorders can get very expensive. I can also see where language could be a concern when creating a video. I live in the USA and take the American English language for granted. Thank you for responding so quickly. The whole idea behind plastic recorders is that they are affordable, robust and almost maintenance free. Having a block (of wood) would defeat that idea... and a block of plastic would be meaningless.

@@nickperpirakis2211 makes sense, yamaha has more pristine sound as it could sound better isolated, but that doesn’t necessarily sound good in a mix kinda like an acoustic guitar with the fingers sliding over the strings sound taken out, too clean
