i think part of it is just laziness, incompetence, or even just being pressed for time; some doctors will just slap on "psychosomatic/factitious" onto a person's symptoms without looking deeper into it just because they couldn't find any horses, and they can't be fucked/don't have time to look. you're supposed to start looking for zebras if it's not horses, not just dismiss the whole thing as "psychosomatic/factitious" without doing any other digging; hell, even if it is psychosomatic, that still means something is very wrong, just somewhere else. also, some people get dismissed because there is a horse, even though that horse is a risk factor for other, more lethal horses (e.g. obese patients with serious symptoms that later turn out to be cancer or some shit initially being dismissed as just being part of their obesity even though obesity is a risk factor for pretty much everything). there is also a cultural/communication issue at play here; some conditions, especially conditions with a strong lifestyle component, are seriously trivialized in society when it comes to their severity because they're seen as more of a moral failing than a medical condition requiring treatment, so people don't think that it could possibly explain why they feel so shitty or are having such a hard time with it and may not comply with their doctor's recommendations as a result. additionally, a lot of people will interpret the word "psychosomatic" as being dismissive, because the root "psycho-" is associated with mental health, and we tend to treat "mental/behavioral problems" as not being as serious as "physical problems." it doesn't help that some doctors use it that way, either! medical professionals need to get better at communicating that "psychosomatic" does not mean "factitious", and that a symptom possibly being the result of a mental health problem isn't a dismissal, and shouldn't be used that way. think of it like how one of the early signs of a heart attack is pain in your arm; something is still very, very wrong, just not in the same place that it hurts. i learned the hard way that mental illness, if ignored/dismissed for too long, will start to manifest in physical symptoms, because your autonomous nervous system knows that something is fucking wrong, since the other parts of the brain are telling it that you feel like shit, but it can't figure out why, because you're not injured or sick, and that's all it knows how to deal with, so it extrapolates that the thing that's wrong is some internal malfunction and starts interpreting the signals it gets in that light. mental health is intimately tied to physical health, which makes sense; your brain is what's running the whole show here, and when it gets sick, the rest of your body isn't gonna be doing so hot, either. and this deterioration of your physical health can be irreversible; you might continue to need treatment for physical problems caused by neglected mental health long after you recover from the "mental" aspect. tl;dr doctors need to get better at talking to their patients.

She could have been 50, or she could have been 79 years old, her skin was shockingly damaged. Very, very tragic, but I don’t think more developed countries use “hysteria” per say. It’s more like “pyschosomatic” or “otherwise undiagnosed” sorta terms, which you mentioned briefly. I have a BPD diagnosis as a man and let me tell you, I have gotten some very strange reactions because of it, because I’m not “an attention seeking teenage girl” ??? Hysteria was literally thought to be caused by the uterus migrating through the body and up to the head. Yeah, it is no longer literally called "Hysteria", but women's pain/complaints is sooo much more often overlooked or ignored when compared to men's concerns, it's basically the same thing as saying, "She's just hysterical". They used to think that "hysteria" was caused by a woman's uterus wandering around her body. "Hysteria" was just used as a catch-all for anything from mental illness, to misunderstood physiological problems, to a woman who maybe just didn't want to do what "her man" wanted. We have come a long ways, but we still have plenty of road ahead.

@@XavierBodd Joy did make a ridiculous statement to be fair. So many foreign bodies inserted into the body do not cause issues. Diabetic pump for example. Or a sensor. When there’s no physical evidence of something physically being wrong with the body. A reaction of a sort. Hormone levels. White cells levels. Etc. Then the next logical step is the psychiatrist. If a person is anxious and is having panic attacks with no seen physical cause (no vitamin deficiencies, no hypoglicemia, no brain tumours etc.) then the next logical step is..? Right.

@@ina7084 Actually, I don't think Joy made a ridiculous statement at all. Your immune system will attack anything that is foreign to your body. Some people who have large breasts recommend using a personally tailored corset to help with their back pain, the theory behind why this works is that the material distributes the weight more evenly over the torso and onto the hips so that no one area is overtaxed. I can’t personally give an opinion on this because I haven’t tried one myself. As with everything else, a corset needs to fit correctly to be comfortable and may not be the right solution for everyone.

It just makes logical sense that if you have a foreign object in your body, your body will try and "fix" it... that takes a lot of energy and affects your immune system... logically that would make you tired, etc... almost like the symptoms of an autoimmune disorder.

I've thought about getting a breast reduction but I'm so scared to do it. Women need to understand that large breasts come with lots of back, shoulder, and neck pain. And great supportive bras are extremely expensive! And forget being a runner with boobs. Unless you have got titanium cups or something. And let me tell you, they aren't immune to gravity. When you have to start tucking your boobs into your waistband or using them as a winter scarf... it's time to do something about it!
@moniquefleming37383 жыл бұрын
I had two breast reductions. Don't be surprised by that. The first took me from 44DD to a 38D. I lost 70 pounds over 5 years, and once again, my breasts were causing me back pain again. I got the 2nd one 6 years later, but since I am in my 50s, my surgeon did liposuction instead of surgery, because I didnt have the glands for breast feeding due to age. She lipoed all the way around my breasts, and my back. After that one, I was a 36C. I do not regret either. The scars fade. Not having the embarrassment of hige breasts, the pain in my neck, shoulders and back, and being able to buy decent clothes was worth it. Don't be scared. Majority of women never regret it. The side effect, your body will shed weight, because it's not carrying huge breasts anymore.

BII sounds like dysautonomia. The autonomic nervous system can be negatively impacted by things like viruses, surgery, or trauma to the body. Some people are genetically predisposed to having this happen. I have dysautonomia and it was triggered badly by my pregnancies. It is also similar to what is happening to Long Covid sufferers.

This is a strange situation. It seems like New York's body never took to her breast implants and tried to reject them. Even when she got her botched surgery fixed, New York's breast reverted back to the orientation of the botched implants. I guess this is one of those situations which proves getting plastic surgery in an effort to make you feel better about yourself may not always guarantee the outcome one expects. It's better a patient is realistic about potential outcomes and determine if they would be content with potential risks that could result in full removal down the line.

my mom got a similar illness from what I understand to have been a silicone IUD. no official diagnosis after about a decade. it presents like a mix of multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, etc. there’s a lot of people that suffer from the same thing, from the same company who made hers. terrifying. edit: I also have a condition called dysautonomia. symptoms like heart rate over 180bpm, almost passing out multiple times a day, body temperature problems, etc. basically fucks up his your nervous system responds. coupled with a good amount of mental illnesses (the one that causes the most problems with my nervous system is CPTSD), it’s pretty rough. I just actually got diagnosed early this year after 7yrs of searching for a diagnosis, which I ended up figuring out with my own research like 5yrs prior. I’ve seen around 10 drs in my life for symptoms associated and how many times did I get referred for blood work to check for diabetes? every couple months. it’d always be “well, your blood work was done about 3 months ago”. so, you’re saying I developed diabetes in 3 months and you’ve completely disregarded that you’ve seen me for years for this and you know I’ve had symptoms since I was extremely young. now, the big question, how many times did I get told it was anxiety? hahahahhh. every fucking visit. I’m not joking. yes, I have an anxiety disorder. no, I don’t get so anxious going up a flight of stairs that my heart rate goes to 180bpm. I’m pretty damn sure that’s now how it works. not to mention that I can feel when I’m anxious. I know when my heart is pounding cause I’m nervous vs sitting on the couch. blows my mind.

So, I have hEDS which can cause susceptibility to all sorts of stress-induced maladies. One very common comorbidity is mast cell activation disorders, which can come with rashes, GI distress, increased joint pain, and mental symptoms. MCAD is a very hard thing to detect, there’s really no simple blood test, so most of us go years being told it’s all in our head before finally being diagnosed. Idk, it sounded really familiar to me, despite my complete lack of implants, and it would seem logical for breast implant illness to be an autoimmune issue. hEDS and MCAD are more common in women than men.
